With a bit of wind around while on our annual far North fishing trip, Stevo and I decided to do a bit of fishing from the sand - over the past couple trips we added the Kontiki after Stevo purchasing one for use back home in Tauranga. We haven't done to badly with it and the great thing when in the North we don't want to catch a lot as we are there for 5-6 days and have really only caught a max of 6-7 fish each time we have set it. With a lot of fishing in the boat and surfcasting we average 4-5 sets over the whole 6 days. Our first set we did was just after arriving in the North just after 6.00pm, we quickly detached the boat and threw all our gear in the cabin. We had a couple of hours left of day light and even though we had just driven 4-5hrs North we were there to fish so why not start now. We packed the surfcasters and kontiki in the car and set off down the beach for our first set, it was a beaut arvo with wind gone for the evening. We have done a few sets now so we are pretty quick now at setting up and we had it heading for the horizon quick smart. We let it soak for a good 40mins and started it's return just after dark, it was the usual story with 6-7 fish at the end. It was a good start to our far North trip, although not big we were on the board. After spending the next day in close on the boat we decided to get back a little early and try another Kontiki set out the front this time, we normally get a few better fish out the front. This time with a little more time up our sleeve we made our way out to the beach, it's a beautiful far North beach with that usual white sand and deep blue/green water in close. We decided to use some fresh Kahawai we had caught in the boat and fresh mullet that was given to us, I quite like to use these harder baits as they do stay on a little longer and also fish still have ago at just the skin. This time we set it further out and let it soak for 50mins, as we were retrieving it we could feel a bit of weight to it and the very first hook yield a nice fish to around 60cm. could this be the set of all sets but the next few were clogged with weed, we knew then the weight was probably more due to this. The great thing was they all weren't all coming up with weed so we still had a chance. Before long more fish were coming ashore with a couple more nice fish, some with weed on them some not. We think the weed was just being picked up on the return as there were even debated hooks empty of weed. As the sun went down there were a couple more shadows flapping on the last few hooks, once again it was that usual 6-7 fish but we didn't mind due to the better quality of these ones. It was a great set in a magic place with the moon in the back ground - you just gotta love the North.... Tight lines
