Hi everyone, I am heading down to the Kenepuru sounds over Christmas this year, specifically staying at Sandy Bay, not far from Portage. I am taking a jetski with me. I haven't been down here since I was a kid, wondering if anyone can give me some advice on how to find Kingfish down here. I have read all the forums I can find and I'm fairly confident on getting Snapper and Blue Cod, but can anyone give me some advice on Kingys? Not sure whether they are near where I am staying or if I need to travel for some distance.

Thanks.

Also, any chance of Groper/Hapuka in this area? Or is that likely further North towards open ocean? Thanks

There are usually a few smaller ones around the mussel farms but they are pretty fussy when it comes to stickbaits and if you hook one good luck getting it out. I have had better luck anchoring up somewhere with current and put out berley and livebaits, or you could try go into the outer sounds where you could also have a better chance of catching Groper an big kings.

Thanks for that, I am definitely taking plenty of berley and not so much bait - plan to catch my bait for the most part - but it can be quite confusing knowing where to go and try, there are so many different bays and routes.
