Just got back from a mullet exercise. Went down stream from the ramp in amongst the reeds.

Laid net and wait 4hrs for 1 mullet and 1 carp. Turns out right spot but leave overnight.

A boat returned from across the bar and been fishing karatahe beach area.

And what bin they had,2hrs 20 snapper from what we saw ranged from 5lb to 16lb,fished 20m in the lee of the cliffs.

I left a mullet net out over night in the river once. All but maybe two of the mullet were eaten by the eels, just backs of skin full of wriggly little eels. Lovely. I haven't done much mullet netting but we used to set a net right in amongst the reeds at high tide or just before and wait an hour or two on the outgoing. The first time I went netting was with a friend and he just set it somewhere in the shallows before high and sat back and watched it load up with mullet. My attempts at that weren't so successful so we  stuck to the close to the weeds method.

The area off the River is very productive but I have an aversion to crossing that bar. I would cross it with an experienced skipper but don't like to do it on my own, although I have. There was a chap on here who used to hand out advice on crossing the river bar but he got it so wrong at times. It takes no prisoners and my boat is a little lacking in power for that one.

Careful! He is watching Big smile . Pity he has alienated everyone he has ever spent any time with including someone he regarded as the best fisherman he ever met.

To be fair to the guy he honestly believes his basic knowledge is as good as it gets. He's  not a complete fool but he just doesn't know where to draw the line. It's a little sad really. I know he had a few loyal fans here (100's!) but unfortunately he can't deliver the goods.
