Thanks Rainbow. I'm convinced the most effective fish catcher is a lure tipped with bait. Best of all worlds.

I too carry a good selection of both Zman and Gulp and will happily swap between them. I find the gulp will produce better if the bite is slow but Zman are go to if I'm just looking for the better fish
Must say my 8 year old grandson prefers sliders though as can't cast properly yet. Look at this face from yesterday. Gave him a lot of fun.

Should add that I would consider Gulp a bait (as well as a lure). As per other posts, there's plenty of examples of fish actually eating it rather than just biting at it. I will stick my neck out and say that I think it would get more bites than real squid, but fewer bites than an oily bait fish such as pilchards and skipjack. Not tested, just my gut feeling.

A long time ago, I bought a tub of squid preserved in fish oil of some kind from the general store in Port Fitzroy. The smell was obnoxious. Unlike salted squid, it was a bloody good fish catcher. That said, it was GBI, so maybe anything would have worked! Haven't seen it since then.

When fishing West Coast or Stewart Island on hunting trips, I use possum, rabbit or hare. I've even used a bit of venison of the top of the neck from a whitetail buck. Catch all the main species that you would expect down there.

Lasts really well on the hook too. I've caught 10 fish on one piece of venny.

But back to the post. I have had a lot more success on Gulp than any other when the fishing is slow. Most anything seems to work, when they firing.

So my system now is Gulp, New Penny to start with and rarely change. If the fishing is good, or over reefs, I use the little squids that Kaveman sell. They go good, and cheap compared to all the other brands, about $2ea.
