Day 2 started much the same as the first with a little less wind but the swell had gone a little more north so gave us a little better lee to play with.
We started by trying to troll up some bait for out at the FADS but things were very unfishy and this was to set the scene for most of the day. To cut it short we trolled out to the north FAD only to find it had cut up rough and was close too unworkable for the lighter gear.
The FAD was 2km away from were it is tethered and was nearly being pulled under as a swell went past, and we didn't have any fresh bait anyway. We made one pass of the FAD with some small lures out and hooked up a small Mahi mahi. Nicole was on to it and in between trying to keep her feet under trying conditions landed it quite quickly but it was a struggle so we headed in to try some inshore fishing. The rest of the day was spent trolling lighter gear for sailfish wahoo etc. Or throwing poppers at any likley looking spots. The condidtions in under the cliffs were perfect if you didn't look at the clouds skidding past up above.

We eventually had to leave and to get back had to round the north headland so the marlin gear was deployed. Nicole had been on strike all day as I was feeling a bit guilty on jumping the chair the previous day and to say she was a bit down on not getting a strike would be an understatment when just about in the harbor interance she gets a strike.
No guesing about this one a little blue marlin goes aireal right at the back of the boat then a good long run to clear the gear with some more aireal jumps and grey hounding all over the ocean. Nicole gets down to the hard work and did pretty darn well for her first time in a chair.

The fight was short and sweet and yes thats 130lb gear bit of over kill but with the prevailing weather conditions it was the best choice. The fish again went to the air with Keyy hangin on the the leader and at one point Nicole thought she was going to get the fish in her lap.
Once it was under control we were asked do we want to take it. Hell yes I love eating FRESH marlin. Keyy and Jeff said they would both like some fish for the families so it was dispatched and bought in.

Nicoles first Marlin.

Blue Marlin, est weight around 80kg, fight time 30 minutes. Vava'u Tonga

We were a half hour from a landing at MS so with the fish cut up we landed with fish for the next three or four nights as we were self catering. Stirfried Blue marlin is now right up there with one of my favorite meals. We took the head and gave it to our house keeper, watching her husband cut it up with a meat cleaver without loosing a finger was an eyeopener.

Part three to come Mahimahi and yfin
