I have just purchased a contour roam, I have not used it underwater yet, but on the surface everything is recording upside down, can anyone help?

Have you read the manual?
I know the GoPro cameras can record upside down for when you are mounting the camera upside down (top bar of rollcage etc). Just a setting change to get it back the right way up.
I understand the contour cameras do the same.
