I have just changed my braid to some brekley fireline 4lb, and im having problems with the knots now. I think its because the braid is so small.
The knot between the backing and braid is catching the braid when I cast and stopping the soft bait in mid air.
what would be the best knot to use to overcome this?

Don't tie a knot to the backing just tie the braid around the backing.
 
Must be a big knot for the braid to catch it? backing is what breaking strain? maybe too thick?
 
I don't use backing myself... less hassle

use 1kg nylon backing, tie a spider hich to a reverse allbright for a small profile knot, very strong!
I use cheap 24kg braid as backing also much better line-lay than mono. Ive seen braid catch on mono its a pain in the###.
