soft bait fishing from rocks can be tricky as braid and rocks don't get on to well , also you're better off finding rocks that enable you to cast into fairly deep water with either a sandy bottom or just a tad of kelp about. i have had some success using a running polystyreen float (just pull out the black plastic straw that's inside) that way you have xtra weight for casting and a really good action on the bait as rather than dragging accrosswards it's bouncing up and down due to the float.just make sure your knots run through the float unhindered . as for locations in auckland i'm not sure as i've been trying this method up in orewa and would try to get as far from the crowds as poss.hope this helps .good luck

Another variation of the float idea is to use a tennis ball, put a spare hook in it with just the eye and shank sticking out.  Then thread your mainline through the eye of the hook to create a running float, or you can soft bait at a preset depth by putting a couple of half hitches around the shank of the hook.
Give it a go, I've always got a tennis ball in the tackle box!
