need to walk in from the cheltnambeach end towards torpedo bay, about 1/2 way, lots of snags/weed .depending on tide can get a good current flow. its only 2 to 3 m deep at any given point, lived around there for yrs and never caught anything,60/70/80s. Be better to go down devonport wharf.Wait till february/march.May get the odd kahawai or real undersize snapper 20cm

Not sure if you can access torpedo bay wharf.I know its been shortened.

Birkenhead wharf was popular place in the 70/80s but think its been rebuilt more ferry terminal now.

when i last fished it 5 years ago was no snags past 30m out - lots of small snapper in summer/ autumn. Must be something decent swimming past at some point but was shallowish where i was.

Devonport wharf was great in the 70s,Mcfairlane had a mussel spat shed on the end of the wharf from memory, whitebait running, with kahawai there, the odd king, snapper, late summer/autumn. plenty of burley in the way of mussels. Then it all came to an end when fisheries said the netters were fishing out of season. NO claimed the netters we are catching inunga not not whitebait. Fisheries stepped in again, well you need 1 inch mesh. That pretty much killed the cottage industry and cheap sales of whitebait in Devonport, now I think pollution has driven it all away.

Total thread drift I know.

Guys do catch stuff there. ( I never have) can get a bit crowded too. Ya won't know unless ya go.
There is  a narrow finger of rock that sticks out from the eastern end of narrow neck beach. I used to see an  old asian bloke fishing there all the time. (I used to walk dog around fort Taka) He walked past me one day on his way home and said hello with a huge smile on his face... I turned around to see a tail of an absolutely massive snapper hanging out of the top of his backpack. It was a total donkey of a fish..... So it can happen. It was just the law of averages at work. He fished there daily. It paid off .

You might be quite surprised. The old boys are down there regularly netting for their "whitebait". Seen plenty of them in the buckets right throughout this year as well as plenty of legal snapper as well as being caught through the spring.

Re North Head, can be ok fishing but lots of boat traffic.

Best possie around the base I've found was a wee bit past the cave area where most people tend to fish.  The odd snagg there but also legal snapper so worth persevering.

Have done better along the ECB shoreline area that Schampy mentioned but mainly in late Autumn.
