Cleaning Steering/tilt tube

Hi,

I'm about to attack cleaning out the steering/tilt tube on my outboard. Grease has gone hard and the steering has stiffened up.

Any tips/do's and don'ts?

Was going to initially clean it out with a wire brush using cordless drill.

Any info much appreciated.
