Trolling motors for game fishing do they work anyone tried it guessing a few have is it worth the trouble having another outboard on the back for trolling, to save the main motor from running up the hrs and must be cheaper to run a 10hp motor as opposed to a 200hp for trolling at 7knots.

Many have tried in the past, but in the era of 2 strokes versus 4 strokes as main engine. Not really worth it unless you run a 4 stroke auxiliary but then again you are adding extra weight to the transom.
I would guess you might chew more gas with a 2 stroke 10hp as it would have to rev quite high to attain your trolling speed.

Just my ten cents worth...

The big thing with trolling is the hull water line length.
Trolling has the hull as displacement , or at best semi...at trolling speeds.
Displacement hulls get more and more efficient the longer they are...A totally different kettle of fish to a hull on the plane.

eg  say a 5.5m boat trolling as a displacement hull will require far more fuel to run than say a 6.6 or 7.5 displacement hull.

So using an aux engine of lower hp on a small er hull will make very little difference, and chances are the same  aux engine on will perform far better on a longer hull...
just as a 200 will do so on each.

Sort of along the lines Catch.. mentions above except its the hull length that makes the difference.

Think it was Tagart who went into this in more detail in a couple threads maybe 5 or 6 yrs ago.

I see where you are coming from Muzz. Ticking the hours up isn't ideal and adds a lot to the daily cost 5x10 hour days = a $700 service at a guess and likely more? So adds $70.00 to the fuel bill for the day as well as the depreciation of the engine with higher hours. Still I think if a trolling motor was a good option others would be doing it.

Thanks for the replies, thought I would ask before I spending up. Seems like a good idea until I got some info from your guy experience.

There is a reason all the 5-6m tinnies don't have a trolling motor for gamefishing.
The plan does work for trout fishing. Trolling at much slower speeds and a small motor can perform the job better than the main motor generally.

I also remember a mate in the early 90's, with a 20ft heavy glass boat 140hp Yam, 2/, he tried a 15hp 2/ on the back, it barely got to trolling speed, was noisy and smoky and at the higher revs chewed lots of fuel.

He felt to achieve the speed and more efficiency would require a 25hp.

Experiment over....Ouch

Yep the reason being the difference between a a hull powered on the plan and a hull before plan, as displacement.

And also explains
