Hey guys, probably leaving auckland on sunday , im taking my 13 yr old boy for a surfcasting adventure. He is absolutely obsessed with fishing. Always has been. And is extremely concious of sustainability and only keeps a couple of fish to eat. He has spent every summer, as have i since a kid, wharf fishing and fishing off his grandparents stabicraft on waiheke.
Ive fished those waters for 35yrs and have got a couple big kings but really the fishing there is really only small just on legal snaps. He has desperately been trying to get a kingy, dreams of it, closely followed by a decent snapper (would be so happy with a 3 or 4 kg red). He finally landed a king but alas it was 2cm under legal so he doesnt think it counts.
My question is, do i take him north and try the likes of maunganui wharf? Or the slightly closer option of the top of the coromandal? He is a real outdoor kid and a great fisherman but i still need to keep things safe so no crazy rock ledges. Anyone got any solid advice? Even better any keen members here local to those areas who would be interested in coming with us? Im not rich and am doing this for him but would be happy to pay for everything and throw someone what i can $ wise.
Thanks guys.

You can try Papa Aroha holiday park in Coromandel area, they offer a water taxi service to the nearby islands. If you pick the right island it's not rough or crazy rocky edges. If you are keen you can even camp overnight on one of the islands (Northern King).
