Saw this on the news a couple nights ago and thought the same.
Multiple offending yet still allowed to operate

Wonder which political party he donated to and if any strings were pulled.

Ive been watching this case. I believe the sentence for the Paua is due to be passed down this month? Incredibly lax time period for someone who is 100 % guilty of stealing a great deal more than your average handbag

"Manning noted a previous sentencing judge had referred to D'Esposito as a frequent offender "

Frequent offender.  The company with no money no doubt loaded dosh off to him one way or another.

Nope already sentenced, wet bus ticket:

"He outlined the nature of the "serious offending" and said D'Esposito must be held accountable through a substantial deterrent sentencing"

"He sentenced D'Esposito to 10 months home detention and 200 hours of community work."

How on earth do those two statements tally? Substantial deterrent sentence for a repeat offender would be fining them $100000 and a couple of years in the clink.

The jails are full, even serious crimes are getting stuff all in the way of a decent sentence.

Ive always loved chinas jail system, it cost the chinese govt practically zero and they dont feed the prisoners and so prisoners are reliant on the red cross food parcels and what their family sends them.Piss the guards off and no parcels for you for a few days etc.

Now it costs about $150k a yr to keep a prisoner here in NZ, how about we offer to pay the chinese govt $75k a year and they take our worst offenders, the repeat offenders who are pure scum. Might not be so keen to re offend then.
If you think you are too small to make a difference, try sleeping with a mosquito in your tent.

The military prisons work well. Nobody but nobody wants to go back. Short, sharp sentences.

I remember that idea was mooted a few years ago and would save billions, was shot down because the poor little angels would no longer be close or have access to their families, therefore their rehabilitation prospects would be affected.

For a bleak comparison of how our justice system works this guy is going to jail for stealing a 1000 dollar phone.

But half a ton of paua for a serial offender doesn't qualify. They say there are two tiers of the justice system and I am wondering...

Reviving an old thread - but same theme. The same crook was back in court again for sentencing on other charges, just before lockdown.
Fined $40k for not paying the crews properly on some of the crooked boats.
Nice guy.

because of bollocks articles like this, largely gratuitous nonsense to a convicted thief   . .

And Iwi saying things like this about him . .

"If they weren't involved we wouldn't have bought into the company at all.

"They are the experts and know the region and market, we just invested to improve and build on things at Takitimu Seafoods for the future."

These Iwi representing themselves as guardians should be freaking ashamed of themselves.

Yeah, wont deal with Takitimu Seafoods ever just as I wouldn't deal with Hawkes Bay Seafoods before.

Taine Randell has gone down a lot in my estimation with his association with this enterprise.

These guys are crooked as and nothing will change their rape and pillage attitude to our seafood resources.

There were around 300 charges in the early 90s as well. Dodgy as. These guys should have been stopped from fishing 25 years ago.
