For whatever reasons, I tend to go for paddle-tails or grubs, normally new penny as first choice, but maybe I should mix it up a bit more.

Suggestions?  Bearing in mind time of year (spring/summer/winter etc).

Life's just too short to do thorough trials....

I recommend you check out these vids below from the boys at Moocher Hunters. They specialise in landbased softbait fishing around Barrier etc. I bet the info is still very relevant to you - he discusses styles, sizes, colours, jigheads etc.
Your New Penny of course gets a mention, it's a classic colour.

Well known charter skipper Tony Orton did an article about wash fishing around the Mokes where he favours the smaller grub tails for the vibration and movement on the drop. Paul Senior (distributor of Z Mans) used to favour paddle tail patterns for wash fishing.

For what it's worth, I changed to buoyant Z Mans for shallow fishing after endless snags in reefy areas using faster sinking Gulp Crazy Legs which I had good success with over sand.
I have done quite well with Motor Oil in shallow (the fat 5" Z Man grubs that you can't get in NZ), and recently at Little Barrier with the Forum trip with JW's Northside Adventures I did well on 7" Fusilier over the reefy territory. Another good one that JW had the team using on that trip was 5" Atomic Sunrise. The latter are both bright, non natural colours. The opposite of what Moocher Hunters like. So there you go - some options to try.

Whatever you use,

It's one of my favourite fishing styles.

I've zeroed in on two things that work for me.
In a windsheltered zone I go light oz for a longer hang time.

But with all my softbaits I still use sardine on any weight jig head.

Works for me.

But those who spend more time doing this than I will have more insight such as above post.
Just cruising in my now sweetas pimped out Southern 755 HT0!

I like the z-man 5” rootbeer jerkshad for wash fishing, caught many good fish on it, then use new penny. 1/4 heads in 3/0 or 4/0 . Normally keep moving around the wash and coast, you may only get a couple of hits then nothing.

I pretty much exclusively use Zman 7" or larger while wash/rock fishing with a 1/4 ounce or 3/8 ounce jig head. The reason being the larger softies have a slower sink rate (more buoyant the larger you go) this also helps reduce the amount of snags when fishing in real shallow. Also, big baits = big fish. The fusilier colour has worked by far the best for me producing my largest 3 landbased fish on softbaits at 10lb, 12lb, and 17lb.

Yeah the DoormatadorZ look really good and come in some good colours, itll be years before the NZ crowd get them in though. If anyones getting some in, id be keen to get some and share the shipping cost. The name is arse but snapper wont care.

I use worm hooks with an articulated head (use a light bean sinker with a tooth pick as a stopper)- rig the hook weedless with tucking the point slightly into the soft bait to reduce snags - this really works and generally go lightweight.

I was thinking that re the name too. But I watched a vid on the ZMan site and the fluke they are designed to target are basically a giant flounder - and their nickname is "doormat" - so the pun in the name would make sense to the market in the US upper east coast.

They were only available at Dick's Sporting Goods until the last day or so. So yeah, I can see it taking a while for them to come here - particularly as the market here seems to favour jerk shads.

What colours would be your top picks?

I've looked up those softies, they do look like they'd be good for the wash. Bulky and buoyant.

I've done a bit of fishing on the NE coast, USA. Similar environment to here, but different fish species. Maybe we could learn a thing or two from them.

Yeah I understand the name but still think it’s putu. Without seeing one In the flesh I assume they would be very similar to the 6” gulp grubs. Colour wise I think fusilier and nuked chicken look the best to me but would also grab the pearl, coco ice and atomic sunrise. Would’ve liked to have seen a new penny, bruised banana and midnight oil
