Problems with my fish finder. It's a Humminbird 597. It's entirely functional apart from it "forgets" custom settings and waypoints on power down. Something to do with the capacitor perhaps?

Anyway, it's served me well and I'd like to get it fixed rather than replaced. Anyone do this kind of work in NZ?

Def sounds like the backup battery or capacitor. Fairly easy to replace if you can find someone with the knowhow. Replacement part just has to have the same spec and fit on the cct board. Shouldn't be expensive part either. Not me I can't do it but there must be someone that can.

Thanks Krow. That's what I was thinking. I tried going through BLA, but they are not answering emails or phone calls. Anyone out there?

Depending on vintage and if battery used will be a soldered battery or replaceable coin type cell - suggest you open up yourself and have a look - check if any corrosion inside - if so time for a new unit. you will want to reseal carefully and use sealant if gasket hard to make sure no leaks!

Or can you live with reset for now and continue to use?   It may die anyway soon how old is it?

I am an electronics tech (not marine) by trade but live in Akld so not much help to you.
Good fishing trip nothing breaks, great trip catch fish.

Thanks MS. I got a PM suggesting something similar. Can't really live with the reset. GPS waypoints are integral to my style of fishing. I bought the unit in 2014. It moved from kayak to jetski with me and it's been great. I did something of a custom installation on the ski, so replacing it is a bit of a headache.

BLA sorted it Thumbs Up

It wasn't related to an internal battery, but the firmware which I updated 6 years ago. BLA couldn't explain why the issue only arose recently or why the firmware update was causing the issue, but rolled back the firmware and problem solved.
