Just put the finishing touches on my new exhaust elbow. Fabbed out of 316L stainless. Works and flows great :)

Old grotty one on the left, new one (before pickle and polish) on the right.

What do you think? If anyone else is interested I can probably make these for others for significantly less than a grand. It's fun!

Cheers!

I am no expert on this stuff, but I have seen instances where stainless and hot salt water do not always go well together.
I don't know if it is a galvanic issue or what, ?
Not trying to burst your bubble fritz, but please investigate more, if I'm wrong, I'm happy to be corrected.
Looks like you have made an excellent job, looks fantastic..

I agree he,s done a good job however it can be improved if he wants to sell it to who ever ,where he,s got it welded directly to the exhaust flange you will notice the bottom bolt is missing ,buy a stainless steel exhaust flange and weld it on then fit the correct gasket here are some images of stainless steel exhaust flanges https://www.google.com/search?q=stainless+steel+exhaust+flanges&tbm=isch&source=hp&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwj84v2fksnhAhXMpI8KHWZKCmAQsAR6BAgJEAE&biw=1366&bih=635

Dave galvanlic/electrolysis is about different metals alloys. And the degree of electrolysis very much depends on the difference between the alloys
Ie stainless steel and steel are both iron based.. Sort of similar
But mix iron with say an aluminium bases alloy any you run into serious issues. Then to get around that one uses a sacifical anoid magnesium based. Even further away from Iron than aluminum and /or anti electoyis compounds added to anti freeze in coolants
Rather a simplist explanation.. A Google should come up with a list of metals and in order of compatability.

I went to buy a few 15 mm stainless elbows from a stainless merchant. He asked me what grade of course, and my limited knowledge back then, I wasn't sure, so told him what I was doing, assuming 316 was the ducks nuts.
He pointed to a very badly degraded fitting on his counter, and said that lasted several hours on a marine cooling system, hot salt water.

The stainless elbows on my engines are 15 years old and 4500 hours. I last checked them at around 3000hrs and they could have been cleaned and gone back on the shelf as new. Will check them again this winter. If I understand it correctly the salt water and exhaust only mix at the very end of the elbows fritzhu made so hopefully won't be a big issue. The one thing that might be an issue is the thickness of the metal. The ones you see from the engine manufacturers tend to be pretty heavy.

Hey guys, thanks heaps for the feedback :-)

There is no missing bolt, it's just a clamp-on flange like the original. It uses one of those weird ring clamps, that's the bolt you see.

I pulled it off recently after a couple of months on the boat and a few engine hours, and happy to report that it looks as nice and clean as the day I first put it on. So far so good, let's hope it keeps going this way!
