I dont surf cast, thu spent many days with the old man as a kid.
We predominantly strayline off the boat, a rig used by the old man in 50s and 60s. I dont know if he also used it surfcasting.
Mainline to a swivel and clip....on the clip goes a reef sinker ( need the swivel/ clip that has the plate of metal.. not the full wire ones)
Also on the clip goes the trace... a 3 or 4 thru surgeon's loop, as small as possible.
Trace length to suit.. on the boat is long enough to go from rod in the holder to bait board.
If want to keep off the bottom...think the things MB refers to above.. little round floats , come in several colour and sizes.. Think H&F have them.
These tend to float upto the hook when in the water.
Maybe for surfcasting a change of sinker type if in current (???) if in current and the sinker holds the bait should rise up anyway..
If you snell the hook, under the turns can put some cut feathers under the loops, from the $2 shop.
Pic has 2 hooks , 1 or 2 up to you.. if one and in current ytou may find the bait will spin like a propeller, make hard for the fish to catch it....its all about tidy baits and no spin
