Believe it or not, this stunning little fish is actually a juvenile Bluenose!! It bears almost no resemblance to its adult form.

We found these about 2 years ago and have been looking ever since.... and then, on Wednesday this week we found literally hundreds and hundreds off the north east coast of New Zealand.
The early life stages of fish like Bluenose are poorly understood and Irene and I are helping researchers in NZ and Australia with records of our finds of Bluenose.

The fish varied from about 10mm to 40mm.

The abundance of these fish is extremely patchy. On Thurs we went out again and searched the same areas but didn't find a single Bluenose. Where had they all gone???

No, they're under drifting kelp slightly offshore and well offshore. As reported above though, they are patchy. There can be lots of juvenile rubyfish in the same environment and, in summer/autumn lots of juvenile silver drummer (plus a few baby kingies).
