Thanks for the reply, Makka.
I learned the knot from the video put up on YouTube by Nathan from Big Angry Fish. I guess I'd describe it as putting loose wraps of braid over the leader (a few at a time), cinching the wraps down periodically. With half hitches to secure the whole thing, then a big pull tight before cutting the leader tag.
What was happening in Australia was the light fluoro was pulling through at that point.
I had never had previous issues with fluoro down to 15lb.  wondered if the braid couldn't grip the 10lb fluoro.

[edit, I had this description around the wrong way - now corrected after re-watching the vid] I've since seen a vid of a guy taking much tighter fluoro turns around a tightly held braid line, plaiting the fluoro around the braid - and wondered if that was a more reliable method in light line ratings.

What method do you use?

I've had that before using a different brand of fluro then I'd normally use, the braid wouldn't bed down into the fluro fluid and wouldn't look waxy, it would slip after pulling tight.
Changed back to normal fluro and it was fine
For quick knots when i cant be bothered tying an fg in light line I like the five turn surgeons knot as I've found it to be the slimmest and most powerful knot

That's really interesting, Spin King.
Because I was trying for estuary fish, and the locals recommended 10lb fluoro, I had taken a spool of Umqua Feather Merchants Deceiver fluoro for trace that I bought for fly fishing. It does look shinier and is obviously thinner than the likes of Vanish or Black Magic that I normally use for soft baiting.
It was so frustrating tying knot after knot with the end result sliding off!

I'll check out that Surgeons knot online.

I hold the end of the braid in my mouth then use the rod to put tension on it.
Then I weave the leader through the braid, keeping the tension on the whole time, it's the quickest, easiest way I have come across to tie the knot, with the best results

Excellent. Sounds like you do it like this, Makka? The Saltstrong guy's method:

I've been using Shimano stuff and found it good, green Sufix 832 tightens to a dark solid green.
Did get busted a couple of times today from braid breaking! Tracked down to excess resin in the guide, which had partially broken off.

Now trimmed and hopefully sorted, but only landed one at 59 cm today. Son in law got a similar one and Rod Holder got a 64 cm fish.

Good to know. I'll give that a go instead. I must admit that loose method made me wonder if the loops would pull up correctly.

Interesed in peoples thoughts on the new shimano Kairiki braid as have just bought a new 1-2kg setup with a 1000 reel and looking to run a nice thin 8 weave braid for extra touch. I was previously running 2-4kg rod w 2500 reel and 6lb 832 which was awesome but I see the Kairiki 6lb 8 weave is down to 0.08mm compared to the 0.14 of the 832. Was hoping to get some feedback from anyone's experience with the product.

Cheers in advance...

What does the Kairiki 6lb braid actually test at? I use and sell Tasline Elite All white series braid. The lightest they do is 8lb which is a 6 strand braid and has a ABS of 14.2 lb.
Awesome braid, very soft and thin for its BS (0.115mm)

I spooled up 150yards of the Kairiki and after using the 0.07mm kairiki for a while its fair to say it breaks at 6lb or not much over which is alright because using only a 1000 setup got to play the fish like a twelve string. It certainly adds a new level of difficulty and excitement but my hookup rate has increased exponentially due to having the extra touch. It is a combination of the line and the light rod but would highly recommend it however you do lose fish from time to time breaking at your uni knot after say 50 fish or from over tightening on the drag.

The 832 breaking strain will be well above its rated 6lb that it why it appears much thicker. Possibly even up around 15lb? It is a good strong braid for its diameter... Can't speak for the Shimano stuff

Also good call on the surgeons. It's exactly what I used for aussie estuary fishing never had it fail. It's a great knot especially for light line.

Yeah your right there on the 832, I found an interesting database someone put together testing line he had 6lb 832 out at 25lb. 832 is certainly an awesome line I use it religiously on heavier setups, but not a genuine 6lb 'light' line, which the shimano kairiki stuff is and for the money is a great super light line option at $30/150m spool IMO.

I am using a Daiwa Generation Black Instant Noodle 7ft 2 piece 1-2kg which I have matched with the new penn conflict 1000 bought from USA. I also have 2 other generation black 3pc rods Deep striker and Black sniper, I swear by them and awesome quality value for money all imported from aussie ($220nz landed) as they are way over priced in NZ. I have a personal preference for 7ft rods.

6lb breaking at 25lb haha yeah thats getting a bit silly. can understand why its not the braid of choice for what you are doing
might as well just make the one size and call it everything from 6 to 30..

flatties? bream?

The snapper and kingy fishing is definitely better over here but I have to say the aussies have it over us in the estuaries. especially when you get further north to where the barramundi are (pity about the crocs)

Bit late to the party but Go Fish in takapuna has Gosen braid in 10 and 12 lb.

I have used it all winter and its probably the best performing braid I have used so far for micro jigs and softbaits.

Gosen W8 braid 300m PE 1 (12lb) dia 0.171 8 ply 4S process braid, soft and stiff which creates line tension to reduce slack line problem. Multi colour line 10m colours. Made in Japan ..
