Went out diving yesterday, got the limit for my boat, so can't complain too much! But, it was hard work and the average size was smaller compared to last year.

I know I'm not giving any secret away by saying I went to Snake Bank, every man and his dog were there anyway Smile

So, wrong spot, too early in the season or a bad year? I wouldn't be surprised if it was the latter, the scallops took an absolute hammering last season.

Boat, but I do dive off the ski for scallops. Either way, I like to keep someone topside when I'm underwater.

I live in OTP. Counted 32 boats there on the low this morning, plus a few throughout the rest of the day/tide. I know last year ended similar to this; boat Park over Christmas too.
Gets a lot of pressure, but is nice n close and easy, the legals are going to be picked up no matter what i suppose, just hope not too many dredge it and ruin the bottom/smash up the undersized.
My big worry is what if NZ First get there mega-port. I'm sure dredging the channel will be involved, could anyone accurately say what that would do to the upper harbour scallop beds?

Agree with all of that Grovo. A few dredges were out dodging the divers on opening day, or should that be the other way around LOL

I was thinking the same thing.. counted 26 boats a bit before 9am and on the return home there was 17 boats on snake bank.

Didnt go snake bank went a different place but from what I can see... it hasnt really recovered from last year it is on a downhill slope.

Get in before they are all gone I guess.

In a few weeks I will go and do my normal scouting where I go and jump in from takaheeeeewhai (no idea how you spell it) to smugglers and all in between. Should give an indication on numbers

Looked like the commercial dredgers were doing o.k. Was working at Leigh wharf last week, and the dredgers were unloading heaps!
It is to be observed that 'angling' is the name given to fishing, by people who can't fish.
