Wondering if someone can provide some advice please...

Planning on a trip with some mates in Feb '18 to NSW to try some squidding, blue swimmer crab catching and prawning. Planning to take some saltwater gear over.

What are the restrictions or rules when travelling between NZ and AU with saltwater fishing equipment???Confused

You need to declare fishing equipment when entering NZ, not sure about the other way. Probably do.

As has been mentioned, make sure it's clean - particularly no sign of any seaweed or crustaceans - and relatively accessible if it's in checked in luggage.
Don't try to take sharp objects such as hooks, lures or, goes without saying, knives in your carry on.

Also, remember that in NSW you need to buy a recreational fishing licence for salt water fishing - certainly with a rod and line, not sure about nets. Probably do. Ignorance isn't a defence, so read up the regulations on line.

Mate, I'm backwards and forwards between NZ and Aussie and the salt water stuff they don't worry too much about.

As has been mentioned, make sure the stuff is clean.
Specifically state it's salt water as opposed to fresh.

Be courteous and be willing to unpack and show them the stuff you are declaring. As mentioned, you need a licence in this 'lucky country' - nothing is free and if there's a way to fleece you they will.

Great advice thanks. I'd not have thought about the recreational license. We're so lucky in NZ. I'll be off fishing tomorrow to take advantage of our license free fishing just minutes from home and the weather (although cold) looks excellent tomorrow.

See you out there!
