I am in the market for an electric reel for deepwater and was wanting to know if there is much between the shimano and diawa offerings in terms of usability and reliability, functionality etc? Keen to here from those with experience with either.

Hey Huntfish
Ok from my experience servicing a few electric reels recently, Daiwa and Shimano Electric reels would be the more reliable brands I see, however they do require regular servicing, stay way from the bottom end cheap chinese stuff, however the Kaigen 1000 reels I see are pretty good when used correctly. Please remember they are an electric assist reel and NOT a winch, they are prone to overheating when used hard in Deep water over long periods, so give them a break by hand cranking occasionally if hauling up 3 big blue nose at a time.
Hope this helps in your decision making process, cheers swordfishsteve

I have used both the Daiwa Tanacon Bull 1000 and the Shimano Beastmaster 9000 reels. Of the two I believe the Shimano has more grunt however the key factor as Swordfish Steve has mentioned is that both are designed to be an assist reel and not a winch.
