What's your take on this?  Fact or spin?
Martyn Dunn director general of MPI saying they do a good job despite criticism of them.

Without needing to even look at all the detail, there is a very simple fact that MPI have not been able to manage the 5% of our fisheries that are 'shared' so that the 99% of NZer's who are not commercial fisherman have secure and fair access to those fisheries.
Then think about declining stocks/fish sizes, areas closed to fishing due to over-depletion, regular reports of bulk commercial waste, massive flaws in MPI's stock management assumptions (by their own admission) etc etc. Obviously they are doing a fine job.

For me the issue isn't quite so much that they are getting it wrong, as much as it is that instead of fixing things they continually produce new spin to justify their industry centric attitudes. Even in this article it is all about the 'cameras', but the cameras mean nothing when the monitoring system appears to be deeply flawed due to the industry being given the role of monitoring itself.

As long as the government continue to believe that chasing a few extra $'s for the industry is more important than the birth rights of it's citizens, MPI will never change because they are being incentivised to behave as they are.

All that before I even start on the horrible mess that the Food Safety Act is. That is rolling out in stages now and again is a terrible bit of legislation that will do much more to grow MPI's staffing and power (and damage small businesses) than it will to protect anyone.

Personally I tend to side more with the original article he's replying to

The basic problem is what the job of MPI is, their web site says ;

"We're helping to maximise export opportunities for our primary industries, improve sector productivity, increase sustainable resource use, and protect New Zealand from biological risk."

All about increasing exports, which is their primary aim.

Thanks Kevin I had not read original article which you posted link to - I tend to agree with you rather than Martyn Dunne or Nathan Guy for that matter.

MPI have been tasked by the Government to double primary exports by the year 2025.

Just words., little more.

Many would agree that main issue with much of the commercial industry is waste and inefficiency .
They have the knowledge on how to correct this. Knowledge without action is worthless.

Same applies to a lesser extent to the recreational industry,in particular increased waste caused by the increased snapper size limit.

Do not worry. "IF" onboard mincers become the norm, visible/washed up/floating wastage and nuisance by catch will disappear. Then our fishing fleet will claim to be the most efficient in the world.
