Headed across to Tryphena Friday arvo, average nights sleep and woke to wipecaps rolling down the harbour (thanks forecasters) cooked a feed then decided to poke nose out and have a look, down colville channel it started flattening off so planed out to 100m and dropped gear into green 17 degree water, not long after in about 120 pulled a coke bottle alby in off the bungy, a few more having a go but puts hook pulled, worked up the 120 ish line with water getting better and warmer, plenty of bait on screen but nothing on surface, carried on up past 200, big pods of pilot whales and dolphins but no bills seen, over the 155 then turned for Fitzroy while watching the wipecaps rolling out towards us, bashed our way in picking up a 10kg kingy off miners on the b/p 5.5 zuker, pulled gear after that and into Fitzroy for the night, bashed our way home at 6 knots Sunday taking 5 hours from broken islands to waiheke. Gotta be fish out there surely but none seen by us, still beats sitting at home on the couch

Went out of Omaha yesterday for the run out to top of the barrier, long way after driving from auckland.

Anyways, for info. We got a fish yesterday, striped marlin. Released it, 135m off top of needles. Lots of bait and gannets hanging around.

Interestingly never caught a skippy or alby.

Radio sounded pretty good for the tournament guys too. Worth the trip right now.

Also launched out of omaha yesterday, headed to mokes for day. No skippies or albies, however huge workup which produced a fish which did not stick. Great seeing them eat lure in close. Would have worked area for longer however pre arranged meeting point. Towed fella in who had motor issues. Long run home. Then sat in traffic at 7:30pm to get home. Majic day on water.

Had a report from one of the contests in the Grumpy's that 3 marlin were seen tailing approx 2 km NE of little barrier yesterday.
Had a call from a mate at the needles that he had 6 marlin behind his lures but no takers & no live bait (1st time gamefishing) had a dead yellowtail and skipped that, landed a Mako **** happens. he was 1.2 km NE of needles.
Just for you info maybe someone else can verify.

Dunno about Marlin, but it wouldnt't surprise me if they were in that area.

There were about four hundred and eighty two hammerheads, tailing through that area when we were running home on Sunday though :)

Hammers are known to follow marlin so keep an eye on them and their direction...

Released a stripey and ate this yft for dinner yesterday on our way down to Whitianga for the Bonze Comp.

Stripey ate the black and green Bonze undertaker and the yft ate the Boss skirted Bonze Angel and both using Bonze Light Gauge 9/0 hooks.
