Lots of spring Kings in the 5kg-15kg class running along the East Coast coastline at the moment and a few bigger specimens like in the pic below.

Kira Pencil 90g doing what it does best.

Awesome photo - may be a silly question but how do you go about finding a good area to start casting? Do you find sign on the sounder or just start casting randomly? what depth do you normally find the kings in?

Cheers!

Thanks, and not a silly question 700LTR. Certain strutures/areas definately hold Kings at certain times of the year when they are sitting higher in the water column for casting usually in spring/summer.
During these months I also tend to cast at most buoys when the current is running as I'm heading out to a spot.Under the spring workups there are sometimes Kingfish underneath rounding the bait fish up, so its worth a cast.
Mayor Island will be holding Kings this time of year from August - November

Certain lures in my opinion are definately more effective at raising fish when the fishing is hard eg Kira Pencil, Kikuchi Hiramasa Tune & Bubble Swimmer, Carpenter Bluefish, Quarter Rampage and CB One Zorro are all very effective on Kingfish when the fishing is slow.
Try some sinking stickbaits too, like the Kikuchi BZ Hybrid 15z and Carpenter Pandora in the 70g size as I have found these two lures personally to be the most effective sinking lures for Kingfish.

There are a lot of lures on the market to choose from but not all stickbaits are created equal when casting specifically for Kingfish.
On a day when they are biting hard yes most lures will land you a fish however in my experience when the fishing is slow specific lures will bring on the bite and have been more effective than others. Try some of the 50g-100g lures if your fishing the coastline/inshore and 100g plus for offshore. You will be surprised at how a big Kingfish will take a small 60g/170mm lure

The Kikuchi Bubble Swimmer below is a awesome lure if you starting out. I usually rig this lure up for my partner and people new to to casting as it's very easy to swim and mange at 60g/180mm. It has a similar action to the Kikuchi Hiramasa tune( I posted the action in another post) but also leaves a bubble trail. Designed to be used when Kingfish are rounding up baitfish in a boil up which is perfect for this time of the year spring/summer in N.Z.
.

Hope this helps!
