Late report but it’s better than never. First trip to Rotoiti last weekend. Fished western bank?, the narrows and Te Mamaku point. I struggled to find any concentrations of fish but the narrows had the most sign. I had my chances with plenty of dropped fish but did land one- a beautiful 6lb butter ball on a slimey ghost. It was a challenge but I’ll be back once it warms back up to try get redemption.

On another note I fished Taupo this weekend and was pleasantly surprised with 15 well conditioned fish making it to the net. Grey ghosts and green orbits worked best and most fish were in 33-36m

I was out last thur and friday mostly jigging Lake Rotoiti.
Normally best time and most productive this time of year but we really struggled again.
Only landed 10 for the  2 days - one nice 3kg fish but alot of the fish very average really.
Most fish seen on sounder around Hinehopu but also caught fish at Ruato, Gisborne pt. Moose , vercoes, the Hole West bank all a blank for us anyway.
Best flies the grey ghost as usual.
We did get one on a soft bait which was a first.

Great monday in Rotoiti Trout jigging - Fished with Barry stevens from 915am to 115 am close to gisborne point - in fact used 1 litre of petrol !
Heaps of smelt around and we worked the edges of these smelt schools looking for the odd feeding trout breaking the smelt up. We foulhooked many smelt they were so thick. Some schools were over 8m thick and 30m long.
Understandably the trout were biting steadily on smelt flies - i managed to land 8 and lost 2 including a breakoff. Barry managed 2 but that included fish of the day just over 3kg. Plenty of fatties for the smoker.
Superb conditions - we overnighted at kinloch and after a thorough wash down of trailer and boat, motor etc went out jigging again Lake taupo from 7am to 915am. Lots of trout smelting , so many it was like fishing in a kahawai work up!. Down in the 30-40m depths the bite was very good- 14 fish landed and nearly all released up to just inder 2kg. Again all on smelt flies.
