National have announced more tax cuts, although given themselves some wriggle room to get out of it if conditions don't allow. The predicted surplus of $1.5b will be split as $1b tax cuts and $500m to pay down debt. Given the debt they have already run up, paying for the last tax cuts, that's like trying to pay off your loan on a new boat by paying 50c a week.

Here's the running total of NZ debt

I see a couple of problems here, firstly this surplus only seems to exist in the imagination of Bill English and John Key -as John so famously said "show me the money". Secondly, anyone knows that if you have a big debt the number one priority is to pay it off. The debt clock says we're paying $4b a year in interest, imagine what we could do as a country without that debt.

Yeah, because that's what history shows us. Oh, hang on a minute

That just shows up to 2009, and we all know which way it has been heading since then.

Don't misunderstand me, I think Cunliffe is an unelectable muppet, but don't believe the BS line that right leaning parties pay down debt better then left leaning parties because it simply isn't true.
