Hi all,
I am new to this forum and new to fishing actually..
I wanna start fishing as a new hobby and need to get a rod and stuff first.
So the question goes..
1) What are the best brands of fishing rods.
2) Where is the best place to buy new fishing rods in AK. (Range of selection more important than price)
3) One of my mates say high carbon is good--probably cos he's got one--but is it really good or are there some other kinds of rods that are better.
Thanks for reading through these boring questions.. ^^ But I gotta start somewhere, and thought I'd get rods first..
Your opinion please~~
Welcome to the forum,BigFish, ...Keep away from the bottom end of the fishing reels and rods, they're just not worth the plastic they're wrapped in!!!..Go and ask for Terry at Smart Marine in Westhaven,he'll steer you in the right direction, mate, buy it once, buy it proper....depends on what you wish to outlay, explain this to Terry, and your wants, what type of fishing you want to do,and you'll come out smiling,I'm sure, maybe the wallet will be a little thinner, but with no regets. Another place is at WS Lauries, also in Westhaven,(just down the road) from 'Smarts',ask for Jon, and much the same good knowledge you will receive from this guy as well,a thinner wallet is again the norm...but at least you'll have a good first fishing combo, and it should last you a few seasons, looked after......by that time, you'll know what is what, and what not to buy etc.....cheers..Jim
Hey bigfish. Welcome.
Good advice from Shimma - but be aware that he is the most uncontrolled spendaholic you ever did see. He is our TAS (tackle acquisition syndrome) champion.
Nah, seriously, go see Terry or Tiny at Smart Marine, or Tazee at W.S. Laurie next door to them (they're in Westhaven), tell them the sort of fishing you want to do and they will sort you out with good kit.
Good kit = nice. Jewellery for men.
Cheap kit = always wondering what good kit would be like.
Hey Big fish, easy answers here buy what you can afford and go from there, buy the expensive stuff and yip your a happy chappy until you damage them on the rocks etc,
but most of all, be happy with what you can get for the money you spend,
Shima is right, buy the best, but starting out buy what will do the job until the time comes when you want to maybe specialise in a certain area.
You will know when you start to loose fish that you need to step up a gear, also what ever you buy look after it and maintain it like it was new, you will be suprised at how long gear will last you if you look after it.
What you wanna do is get a figure in your mind of what you want to spend and go from there, Smarties will see you right, they have not let me down yet, and as bender said ask for those guys tell em what you want to spend and see if they can slip you into some thing more comfortable, i mean ummm yeah a good rod and reel deal.
Oh yeah welcome aboard.
Hey,
Thank you all for your support!! Such a wecoming community here. ^^
I'll figure our how much I can spend--without regrets, that is--on those gears, and head to westhaven.
Have a nice weekend, and if you are going out fishing, good luck!!
