We fished Yesterday. Good water, Great weather even if it rained all day. Apparently there are a lot of fish about spread far and wide with dozens caught over the weekend. RT was considerably more quieter yesterday but maybe because less boats out. Anyway we headed out around south of the Pinnacles. Gear in at 160m Some bait about but not much. Trolled out and around the knights at 240-260. All quiet on bait and action till we arrived at the V in 240m and plenty bait on sounder. Spearos stabbed one beside us as another boat hooked up and also stabbed one in front of us just with different size darts (tagged it). No bites for us. Back at ramp 90 nautical miles later boat in front had one in the boot. First time angler and one very happy young lady. 190 behind the pinnacles. Wish these winds would naff off. Been tough trying to get out there. Good luck out there I hope the fish stay around till I can get out again.

Went out saturday with a mate who had never been gamefishing before on my little tub. Radio was alive with boats hooking up ali over the place but mainly around 200-300m. Got bit at 240m behind main rock,on the long corner, went to clear the short corner and got bit again, damn, looked at the rigger and there was another on final approach, noooooooo don't want 3, managed to wind quick enough to get it away. In the meantime the 1st one has taken to the air and is on a rapid collision course straight at us, had to punch the boat forward as it screamed across the back of the boat, going under the second line by about a meter and only several behind the boat before settling down. In the meantime the second fish has run off about 350 odd and settled. Started to work the first fish as it was close and had to keep moving the second rod around to keep it clear. About ten minutes in with the second fish now around 450m out and on the surface with the line almost horizontal off the bent buts rod tip, I witnessed one of the most horrifying sights you can see gamefishing, and that was the bb and 50w launching out of the rod holder like it had been kicked from behind, before thankfully snappin tight on the safety line. So quick retrieval of the gear and put it in a 90deg rod holder and back to the first fish which was still nice and close. Had it to the boat in 20min and we had already decided that it was going to join us so in went the gaff and onboard it came. Few quick high 5s before telling mate that he still had one more to deal with, which was still happily swimming around 450 odd out. Drove down the line and had it close within 10min, then played merry go round for the next ten with the fish doing big circles around us, before finally getting the leader. Few quick pics then sent it on its way. Big back slapping session, cracked a beer, and pointed the boat for home by 11.45.
Both fish around 80kg and good nick for so early in the season.
Mate doesn't what the fuss is about, half a days gamefishing total and 2 fish to his score, piece of cake

- First trip for me and my equally clueless mate on his boat, one rod each. Two marlin hooked, one threw the hooks and the other one busted me off. I wasn't prepared at all.

- First trip for me and another clueless mate. Yellowfin landed.

- First trip on my own boat (solo). Two marlin strikes, neither stuck. One solid hook-up, but the braid had bedded on the reel and the inevitable happened. I blame the aforementioned mate who had caught the yellowfin on my rod and didn't know how to use an overhead reel. I think some loose coils went back on to the spool when the fish was running toward him.

Beginner's luck(?) and beginner's lack of preparation!

There is a never ending list of ways to loose a fish. You think you have seen them all, until..........
But 100% prep helps.

Forgot to post on here but in case you missed it (even on 3 news) WDSAC Tutukaka is having it's best Marlin season ever. Most fish being caught around (outside) the V. For various reasons I haven't been able to get amongst them even though I've been out a couple of days. Hopefully I can find one in the small boats this weekend.

Fished both days of the small boats with most fish caught on the Friday. Saturday was much harder for everyone. Weather wasn't too bad. We were close to other boats that caught fish but again wasn't our day. Saw yellowfin tuna feeding on Sauri. That was cool. Most fish were caught behind the knights >200m but there were others in closer and most areas had some action. Out again in a couple of weeks.

Dunno if people here try it or not. But when the YF are feeding on top and not taking plastic (can be often), worth trying poppers. I have caught most of my YF on poppers. Very high %ge strike rate under those conditions.

And I have caught them on whole pillies on the surface in South Africa. Toss in pieces of pilly and then one with a hook, and you hold on as it screams away.

Thanks Guys. wasn't massive workup. I'd guess less than a dozen smallish (maybe 15=20kg) moving fast with the Sauri. I did have a cast rod and poppers on board so I will take that advice and give it a go should that happen again. Hard to stay with them though as had a full spread of lures out.

Hard when they are moving that fast. Only chance really to pull the lures and race ahead. I have been on the plane sometimes trying to get ahread. Not easy.
But poppers will also bring them up from approx 30m when they have gone down and not busting on the surfage.

Fished day one of the Marsden classic today. Out from Marsden point. Lures in at 07:40 120m trolled out to 300m Looking hard for that one bite but not for us. good water and the odd bait on sounder but not tight. 56 boats and when I last heard just 1 landed south of the knights and couple dropped. 2 small Y/fin way wide and North else very quiet. Good weather today. That's more than I can say for tomorrow and the last day Saturday. Might end up sulking at home.

Didn't fish today and the forecast wasn't wrong. Lots did but again no marlin for the comp. Looking like they are just not there. Last day tomorrow and weather is even worse so I'll be going for spot prizes.

I was on a friends boat gamefishing out of marsden about a month ago and someone said over the radio that they had been informed by a good source on a commercial boat that a purse seiner had scooped up about 200 marlin in one go and basically dumped the whole lot.

That's just what we heard over the radio...

Was probably true. Early in the season there were hundreds out there. Almost all small models on the 60kg range. No qualifying marlin were caught in the comp. 16k first prise went to Sumo with 4x kingfish.
Only 1 skippy over the qualifying weight of 2.5kg was caught and that was a massive best of 4.5kg.
Picked up a couple of spot prizes that easily paid for the tickets. Lets hope the fish and the weather play ball next year.

Yeah while I haven’t got out much this year for reasons outside my control - wife recovering from surgery,  But I did get out today and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Must say was fantastic. We launched from Leigh in my little stabi with an old mate to troll area between Sth of hen to Mokes ( the old triangle)  , where I got a nice stripee out here last year between hen and little B. So high expectations.
Anyway we had a good day was little  lumpy in morning. But got to Sth side Hen no worries at leisurely steam and deployed lures in about  75 -80m trolled out to 110m inside Simpsons which at about 10.30am started noticing a lot of gannets. At around 11.00am it went nuts 100s of gannets diving. We got hit on longrigger , fish smoked off couple hundred meters but turned out a nice 15 kg plus king. Would have  to been marlin in such a big workup, king was chocka with fresh pillies. Seen lot of marlin in these pillie work ups in past here. We got no snapper at Mokes but caught few on way in off Leigh, and dropped big one that bent hooks out on a bottom ship lure off Leigh. Snapper off Pakiri were very small. Back home at 7.00pm in Auckland. Got park this morning by boat ramp at Leigh. Not many boats out really (I like that) and fresh fillets of snapper and king in fridge, and presently drinking a grants whiskey. Not a bad life.
