I don't understand really. After one hour you grap the leader, fish going nuts and you let go. Fight fish for another hour before hooks broke and bend. So thats an official catch. Please explain this to me.

The IGFA made the 'grab the leader' rule to facilitate easier catch and release. Fish doesn't need to be worked to exhaustion so swivel to the rod tip or deckie grabs the leader and fish is 'caught'.  Doesn't always seem to make sense on every fish but that is the rule.

Under IGFA rules for a catch a release fishery, a fish is considered "caught" when one of 3 things happens:
-Someone is able to grab the leader
-The swivel reaches the rod tip
-The knot joining the mainline to the leader material is inside the top guide of the rod (noting that only something like the last 5 metres of line before the leader is counted as the mainline)

I let go of the leader because I was reluctant to put to much pressure on the light gauge hooks (After skipper had given me a big lecture about taking it easy with them), with standard (for lack of a better term) game hooks it was caught for sure as the fish was pretty docile, just would not come up that extra couple of metres to grab the bill. It defiantly reached all of the above criteria to be a caught fish but how come we all feel so gutted?, did not feel caught to us and that is what really matters.
THERE ARE TWO KINDS OF FISHERMAN, THOSE WHO FISH FOR SPORT AND THOSE THAT CATCH SOMETHING.

You don't have to tag a fish for a catch.
If you intended to release it, then it's a perfect release.
If you intended to weigh it, well, can understand the disappointment.
Well done, anyway.
Be yourself; everyone else is already taken

Hi Steve,
I can't speak for Sunday, but I was one of about 6 boats out of the Hoki on Saturday and heard on the radio 3 fish caught before 11am, with a few more hookup calls. Most 120-130m. Not sure how the afternoon went, I was off the water and on the way to the smoker :)

cheers

**Please Note** The paddock at Little Huia will be closed next Friday and Saturday, 25th and 26th January for a Turner Family function.  The paddock will be open again on Sunday.

The Westcoaster will be held on Friday 1st and Saturday 2nd March with clean-up Sunday 3rd so this will mean the paddock will be closed then also.

Yes, sorry just saw this.

2 weekends ago we were in the Albies between 65m-85m. Hooked a marlin on a tuna lure which promptly snapped and also had one take a livie but we didn't manage to hook and fight it.

20.8 degrees in the morning rising to 21.5 in the afternoon.

Went out today XToad, farrrrrrrking motor problems at midday at the hundred .
80 meter straight out we had a big splash 100 m off the bow at  9am got the team excited .Headed to the hundred and on to the 150 meter ,out there was a desert so back into the 105meter where we pick up a albert in a small group of them .
5 minutes later we had a marlin on the wake on the starb side 20 meters from the shot gun , we think it looked at the lures but it chased some bait which was in front of it .
Then the bloody curse , limped back in . Conditions were beut , the sw pushed the eastley in the avo no more that 10 knots out there . 100meter looked the best .
Had saurie in 65 meters limping in straight out side the bar .

I better tell what I've heard. Saturday was our marlin money comp. For 20 or 30 boats (guess) that braved the atrocious conditions we had 2 x tagged and 3 weighed. Two of those fish were caught on the shallow side of 80m. Ohhh there were 2 dropped as well. Good odds eh!

Skippies & albies at 80 to 100, blue water everywhere at that depth. We're going Wednesday. It's going to be flat as.
