Rumor has it, an 8m senator, in this forecast, cant imagine it was much past white. Im sure there be lots more details to come. Well done to them anyway.
I own 501 lures, but i can only run 5 at a time. What to do??? Man I have some sleepless nights!!!!

run a solo mission figure 8 around mayour and penguins today, skippies all over as previously reported but not a sign of all the marlin that were there last week, water was stuck in the high 19's.  Good to give the new riggers a run gear ran really well, conditions were way better than I
expected with a nice down hill run all the way back to a bouy, last skippie can a km from A bouy.

Are they sure it was a northern blue fin, my guess is that it would be a nice southern bluefin. People forget that they used to get a few southern bluefin in the BOP at this time of year. If it is a northern then it is the smallest caught in NZ probably by a long way.

Went out on Karl's (Fitty) boat with his son Sam yesterday, and did the loop around Mayor after getting some kahawai in the entrance for liveys. Water was a pretty good colour but never got above 19.8. Decided to troll liveys back down the inside of Mayor. After a couple of uneventful hours up came a nice big hammerhead which had all sorts of fun trying to catch the kahawai, pity we didn't have a video camera as it would have made great footage 20m from the boat, eventually it got the livey and Sam quickly put the drag up and we were in. Sam did a great job on his first real gamefish on 37 kg standup, took him about 30 minutes to get it up and tagged about 150 kg.

Trolled today penguins round back of mayor towards aldies a wee bit then back in.
Didn't see anything haha. Got skippies on bungee but other than that Was v quiet.
Temp got up to 20.9 out wide(bout 6mile behind mayor)
First time really giving it a nudge so will be fun learning and that. Hopefully more eventful next time.

Guiys if you want a bit of fun get up near Lassiters and catch a skippy (or catch kahawai near A buoy on way out) bridle rig it and troll slowly towards Penguins can almost guarantee a hammerhead and you may get lucky and get a marlin instead. They are great fun and a good way to learn how to handle the boat for a big fish and if you stuff up and loose it, who cares. Sets you up really good for when you do get that marlin on.

Forgot to mention before that I got talking to a guy at the ramp yesterday who had trolled lures out to Mayor and then decided to troll over one of the knolls they jig for kingies on (think it was the one close to Tuhua) to see if there were any kingies there. They pulled there game lures in a trolled a couple of stick baits on their kingy outfits, first pass and a nice stripy jumped on, they fought it for quite a while before busting it off. Bugger

in regards to the bluefin, Rick Pollock, Steve Haddock and several other very experienced people were at the weigh in and they all called it as a northern. Steve Haddock as a surface longliner has seen many so i think they got it right, wouldnt know the differences myself but the fish was quite long in the back end and not as rotund as most photos of southerns i have seen photos of. Sorry didnt take camera with meEmbarrassedOuch but hopefully some one got some photos to put up here at some stage!

Re northern bluefin,I was just looking through a old game fishing book and i found this

'in early 1980 (16/01/81 for what i can see on the whakatane catch board ) a boat "see lee" trolling off lottin point got they got a quad strike lost 2 after 20 min ,after 2 hours the first was landed by Graham potter 107 kg on 24kg, after 4 hours the 2nd was landed by Rex wood and weighing 158kg
both being northern bluefin tuna in the book (saltwater gamefishing in new zealand page 141)
but looking at the nz records it is under southern blue fin so who knows

Classic you say that about that boat droping that stripee on the stick bait vance, we dropped a stripee on that exzact knoll north of tahua at around 1pm yesturday then saw a big tinnie there with twin outboards fighting a fish for a bout 10mins after we dropped that fish if was same boat? Ours was bill wrapped. Good to see fish so close the the island. We tried to get some baits at tahua but was hard.
