We launched at toots last tuesday morning and headed off up the coast at about 100m for a bit of a reconn.,gannets sitting  in groups all the way,but no workups .only action was a mako of about 40kg.
Parked in whagaruru for the night ,trying to get some macks(or something ) for the bait tanks,to no avail.
Bait fishing in the morning turned into a snapper fish and then decided to try jigging a few of the reefs round there and cape brett for kings.Caught a few to about 14kg,they're still there growing. Finally got a ky for a livey which we towed round piercy island for a while, trying to entice what was responsible for the big splashes we saw there, flaged that and headed back towards ruru for the night ,stopping on the way for a dive.
Up and at em in good time on thursday and heading for the mayhem off lizzies that we'd been hearing on the radio.well we got to about 80m nearly off home pt before we sawther first of many workups for the day.drove round amoungst that for the morning alternatively towing lures until we were in the heat of it then giving the ky a swim.wasn't workin for us so we headed towards lizzies.workups all the way but nothing liked what we had on offer.almost bounced the ky off the heads of a couple of marlin we threw it at, but...not our turn that day.A real blast being amoungst that many fish tho.And that was that.
Back to the ramp so my mate could be at work at 7am in ak .
Packing the boat again now for another round tomorrow(hope swellmap has overestimated the wind)whats the forecast out the window catchelot?
As usual any info/pointers greatly appreciated
Thanks Krow for the directions to the ice plant
anyone else having a go tomorrow?

Ýep,monday was very fishy again saw LOTS .
With the marlin feeding on small stuff, decided to change our standard pattern for some smaller ones,LR got a little pakula zipper in evil angel ,SR got black n purple widerange,LC got the pacific fruit salad and SC,well the pacific baitfish stayed there and a pink n blue maggot out in the back.
Got into the zone off lizzies and found some gannets on the water so started to circle them and crack,SR nailed, next thing marlin tailwalkin beside the boat, line peelin but only long enough to get harness on and pick up the rod.good start anyway.Short while later and the other rigger pops and a marlin pulls a bit of string. Was surprised to pick up a smallish mahi on this lure a bit later on,thought they liked the water a bit warmer than 19.5?Had another hit on the SR and then a strike on the baitfish and we're on!this one stuck.shortly into the fight  and I could feel it's tail?hitting the line, another one tail wrapped?About 20 minutes into the fight it was all over and wound in to find end of the line all scuffed up?That was above about 5m of trace and 3m of double so?maybe hit by another fish?
So that was monday, lures worked better for us although we did swim baits periodicaly through the day.
Tuesday we called a bye due to sea state and just stayed in close and in the harbour snapper fishing .
Wednesday dawned another nice day so after eventualy catching some baits we were off again to the zone to find about a dozen or more boats just drifting baits.Quite a different day there, with no birds and no surface activety either.Towed lures, swam baits, swam baits ,towed lures, zip.found an area that showed bait on the sounder and .5 deg temp break but couldn't raise anything there either.
And that was our shot .Back to ak for a bit of work and regroup for the next round....

I ran two smaller lures yesterday and hooked up on a Pakula med sprocket in lumo. Was out around 122m behind where all the action had been. Two others were taken around 130m and further north on baits and one out at the KP on a bait.

Trust me ,your asking the wrong guy!!! I could tell you where they aren't (usualy about a 5km radius around me)Big smile.
Haven't fished off oceans but the go seems to be livies and look for the workups over the last two weeks. Mine was on a blind troll. Birds and bait seem to be the way to go and if using lures, not too big...

pyromaniac youd be better to tow the boat an extra 40 mins out to tutukaka and head out north between 100 and 120 from matapouri through to home point
