What a fantastic tournament, big congratulations to the club and everyone involved we will definately be back next year!
Hey guys,
im fairly new at this game fishing thing but am hooked......... i sailed a 52ft race yacht down to wellington prob the end of feb, borrowed a big rod and reel, stand up harness thing and brought myself a lure (was a C&H lure blue and white) dont know a hell of a lot about them) anyhow didnt hook up anything the whole way past the mercs, aldermans until we sailed past Cape Runaway (just before East Cape)…………..I came up on deck prob just after lunch, and as I looked up out to my lure I saw a massive fin and tail thrashing towards the lure. I yelled to the boys MARLIN! And started trying to un tie the rod from the backstay of the yacht. This was a screw up to start with and my 1st mistake, as the reel was screaming I was trying to un tie knots and get a harness on. Took waaay too long. Anyhow finally got all clipped in and started to wind in. My mates put the yacht in neutral (possibly another screw up, what do you guys think??). Started winding in and all of a sudden the weight dropped off it. About 30sec later a large stripey swam up to the back of the boat and turned side on to us and then just cruised off, almost to say F*ck ya! Was amazing seeing a fish like that so close. Got the line in and it felt like it had been dragged along the road was all ruffed up. People ive spoken to reckon I didn’t put enough 400lb trace on the lure and I got a bill wrap? Prob right.
Im going to try again this weekend out of whiti and was wondering what colour lures you guys think are working at the moment or any other tips you may have to throw my way. Was thinking of trying the back or Red Merc?
Cheers!
