What a fantastic tournament, big congratulations to the club and everyone involved we will definately be back next year!

Very well organised and the prizes were just great. You know things are good when you take home a TLD 25 and Backbone 24kg rod for biggest Kahawai...
Weather was terrible (probly lucky for all the fish really) and a great time was had by all couldnt ask for any thing more,

This tournament has been orchestrated from the start by John Mort (Gunsmoke), as he is the most passionate trailer boat fisho i know, and most of the credit i believe goes to him. After last years tournament had concluded, he was organizing sponsors the very next day and is now sorting sponsors for next years comp already. A real dedication to the trailer boat fraternity and I am surprised he didn't fill the 90 boat quota but then the weather was not ideal. The prizes were overflowing from everyone's tables each night. We backed up last years heaviest King (Ocea 4000 for 1st)  this time around, and now have another Ocea 4000 for 1st. How good are they as an incentive to enter? Cheers John, Great stuff.

Hey guys,

im fairly new at this game fishing thing but am hooked......... i sailed a 52ft race yacht down to wellington prob the end of feb, borrowed a big rod and reel, stand up harness thing and brought myself a lure (was a C&H lure blue and white) dont know a hell of a lot about them) anyhow didnt hook up anything the whole way past the mercs, aldermans until we sailed past Cape Runaway (just before East Cape)…………..I came up on deck prob just after lunch, and as I looked up out to my lure I saw a massive fin and tail thrashing towards the lure. I yelled to the boys MARLIN! And started trying to un tie the rod from the backstay of the yacht. This was a screw up to start with and my 1st mistake, as the reel was screaming I was trying to un tie knots and get a harness on. Took waaay too long. Anyhow finally got all clipped in and started to wind in. My mates put the yacht in neutral (possibly another screw up, what do you guys think??). Started winding in and all of a sudden the weight dropped off it. About 30sec later a large stripey swam up to the back of the boat and turned side on to us and then just cruised off, almost to say F*ck ya! Was amazing seeing a fish like that so close. Got the line in and it felt like it had been dragged along the road was all ruffed up. People ive spoken to reckon I didn’t put enough 400lb trace on the lure and I got a bill wrap? Prob right.

Im going to try again this weekend out of whiti and was wondering what colour lures you guys think are working at the moment or any other tips you may have to throw my way. Was thinking of trying the back or Red Merc?

Cheers!

Depends on what you got back in the way of line - if it was busted off before the leader I'd say it was your knot... I doubt that it was a lack of leader..

did you check your drag to your line weight -

just go through this checklist

drag set to 1/3 of your line weight.

test all of the gear eg make sure all the knots hold..

we will be in that area saturday / sunday dragging plastic.. keep your ears to channel 61.

just remember its one thing hooking them...  then you have to battle it.. the neutral selection wasnt silly.. I keep my boat in gear to add to the possibility of getting a double strike. only problem you may find in your yacht is actually turning and chasing if its a powerful fish.. otherwise you should be sweet...

good luck on being hooked up again

I'd be going for the pakula lumo sprocket its one of the best producing lures I've owned

Bullrun thanks alot of your help mate much appriated.

Wont be on the yacht this weekend, got a place in whiti and am taking my stabi craft. The boats name is HUNTRESS ill keep an ear out on 61 sat/sun.

Spoke to my mate Shane who lives there in whiti he suggested the pakula lumo sprocket aswell as seems to be working for alot of people at the mo - so might give it a go.

Regarding the knots and losing the lure, am not sure if it would of been this as I chrimped all my lines for this exact reason???

am going to set up 6M of 400lb trace on my new lure to be safe. or anything else you would suggest?

thanks again BULLRUN

Hey guys. Coming up at easter, uni holidays, and if any one has a spare seat on a boat get in touch. Happy to chip in for gas, and beers afterwards etc. Haven't done any gamefishing, but would love to experience it. Cheer Hamish

Did you really crimp your mainline to the swivel? If so did you use the right sized crimp? If the bit of mainline you got back was all scuffed up maybe the fish got all rapped up in it. Then it only needs a flex of the tail or to land on the line to break it. There truly is a hundred ways to lose a fish...I make my traces 7 metres of 3-400lb then when they get a bit worn or scuffed up one can shorten them up till they hit about 5 metres, then you can use them for light tackle where you are limited to 4.5 metres trace length (if you are fishing to igfa rules)

That is where we were when a marlin decided to put on an ariel display. It jumped about 8 to 10 times.
Also spotted a HUGE turtle lazing around on top

Did you have a crack at the turtle Tim? Lotta good eating in one of them, turtle soup in particular is very nice.

We went out behind red on Sat and saw Marlin in around the 70M mark, couldnt get them on the bite. Went out deeper to about 120ish and it was pretty dead at that depth compared to the bait fish action, skipys and marlin in at 70m. Went around to Richards and had no luck either. Went to the game fishing club that night for a chat and I think 2 might of got weighed in that day??? not too sure of the details or where they where caught????
