Longer leaders are good when there's no wind or you have elevation and plenty of room behind you ie. a boat or wading flats. Like Desmo I came into saltwater fly straight from a frothed out dry fly trout background, I'll get back to frothing on the side of the river in camo gear oneday soon. 14ft would be standard, double rod length in ideal conditions.
I've stuck with longer leaders as I've never known better, usually a rod length and a bit is my rough guide, I do cut down if its windy though.
Also funny is that the first rod/reel setup I bought off trademe for the salt came with a full sink line so that's what I learnt with :) Pick up from behind and haul forward, haul back then shoot. I bought a full sink line when I moved to Esperance for my Xi3 - bless that rod wherever it is, probly fishing in the tropics and having a splendid old time - and went back to using one there, I actually enjoy throwing them about but you have to be on your game otherwise you'll be back home whimpering in no time.
The line I used was a Teeny, most of it floating (yellow) then it changes to a full sink (black)...
Striking a fish using these feels pretty cool :)
