Done the filleting and even though expected it's still amazing just how fat and healthy these west coast snaps are. From the 4 snaps going 44, 48, 51 and 56 the tables show average weights from 1.74kg to 3.41kg with a combined weight of around 10kg. These fatties went from 2.8 to 4.7kgs with a total combined weight of 14.7kgs. the 56 was almost 1.3kg over πŸ˜€. Too late for weight watchers now😊. Even the KY left that layer of fat on the blade, awesome.

Big batch ready for the smoker, heads and frames delivered and fillets ready for the pan...yumπŸ˜‰

Seen the weather window yesterday so shot my boy out for a crack at some carrots as he was itching to get his rod wet he won at the boat show from shimano. ( thanks Shimano for that he was stoked. Awesome) only got 2 not sure why water was very dirty from all that rain but we did get into the snaps with the little man getting one just over 10lb which put up a mean fight for him. Took 8 for a feed and left them there biting. Mint day out home round midday

Hi Guys,

The good lady and I are about to try a first expedition into the Kaipara.
We have fished the East Coast extensively for many years but have now downsized to a smaller boat (509 Stabi) so want to venture a bit further afield.

Research tells me the markers near Shelly Beach are a good place to start but was wanting some info on the best wind/tide conditions in the area.  I know it is quite shallow in places so does this lead to a short chop/wind-wave type effect and in what wind forecast, strength/direction should you just not bother.

Any and all advice gratefully accepted.

Thanks in advance

Cheers

Been a while for me on the kaipara.
Ynot and I on his trustee Surtees did an early mission on the kaipara.
Shelly beach launch.
Carrots the quarry, we did succeed but seemed hardish pleasant work.
Many were of a good size a really good size.
Not like those pip squeak manukau muddy things Smudge drags up.
Kawhai from small to large were a plague nuisance. Even on light gear after thirty odd I'd had enough of there interference.
Good to spend time with Geoff on the water, and we even refrained from solving the worlds problems. Glorious sea state and sunrise.
Think the fishwhisper was out there screaming for more luck.
No snaps in our shallow zones.
Entirely pleasant.
Well until it was interrupted by a swoffer.
Those guys are lethal with there gear wizzing past your earlobes.
Thinking of petitions against swoffers on the kaipara, primarily as they are having too much fun.
I'm sure OTDRM will sign up.
Actually place was full of celebrity fisherman, should of taken my bits to get signed.
Haven't been to Shelly since the scallop season last year.
Boy has the beach area been dressed up. Very nice thank you.
Finished the day with coffees and burgers and chips at Shelly beach and swapping yarns.
Great day out made better with mates and fish in the bin.
Just cruising in my now sweetas pimped out Southern 755 HT0!

Finally got that first trip out on the Kaipara under our belt on Saturday.  After a chat and a bit of advice from Bazza on the do's and don'ts (cheers mate you're a legend) we headed out on an incoming tide and headed up towards the concrete marker.  2 hrs later with 8 nice gurnard and a some kahawai we headed back for a well earned beer at the cafe.  We enjoyed it so much we went again on Sunday.  Another 9 fat gurnard so we were able to share the bounty with friends and family.
This was one of those rear 1 in 100 weekends when the conditions were perfect two days in a row and the warriors came from behind to win a game
Can't wait to head up there again and looking forward to exploring a bit further field into some of those smaller channels and up onto the flats.

Geoff you would love a day out fishing the kaipara with a couple of boats - Graeme (otdrmn) is a heck of a lot of fun to have in the vicinity. We have had some real fun days this year out together with our two boats. Never a dull moment.
