A short clip of today's action fishing the Hutt River, Wellington - right amongst the hussle and bustle of people doing their weekend thing, not big fish at all, but awesome fun, and only 20mins from the CBD.

Awesome, glad you fella's enjoyed it. I'm guilty of not fishing my backyard in search of greener pastures I have to say... but gotta say, although small fish it was such enjoyable / rewarding fishing.

Think I landed about 17, but didn't include all the footage. Dan got about 8-10 as well. Sight fished a few of the but mostly blind, The Hutt is the hardest river to spot trout in I've ever fished, as you say glare coupled with cobbly bottom and well blended-in fish make it a challenge.

About 6 or so on dry's!

River is looking very healthy, nice algae on rocks, plenty of nymph life, mayflies coming off.... and those F^%&**^%%$'N pricks at the regional council seem to be leaving the river alone in regards to cross-blading thus far...

It's got that feeling in the air alright, nice fish Tim, some lovely marked and coloured fish in the mix at present. Is that a wee wet in his gob?

Not really, good all through it's length, as usual, the higher up you go, the less fish density, but the size increases, right up into the headwaters above the weir where the fish are self-sustaining, old and large.

The lower to mid reaches hold large amounts of fish, latest figures fluctuate between 100 - 300 (large/medium) fish per km of river depending on sections.

Look for riffly heads with willow lined bank on one side and fish shallow, literally 1-3m out from the edge of the river using a small dry with a short dropper, they're quick-spitters, so be ready to rip into 'em.

yep Id agree with this. Many a time Ive stood in water 6 inches deep for a few minutes just looking into crystal clear water only to eventually spot one of those yellow speckled browns. Its a remarkable river and this is one reason why

Best we get out there one day John and slay some, make a change from Tarakihi!  Have heard some comments surrounding good numbers of sea runners smashing Whitebait in the lower reaches this past few weeks....

Might have a look this weekend if the rain doesn't colour the river up. They we're hooking them down below the Ava Rail bridge.
