Have been stuck in Auckland the last few weekends due to commitments so decided I was gonna head up north to the Bach at Oakura for a fish this weekend regardless of the weather as we can usually fish somewhere.
Forecast was not the best, but Westerly winds Kept the swell down. We woke up early sat morn and made our way up north. Stopped off on the way to Load up on Koheru and after 1 hour we only had 2 in the tank and 1 decided to die on us! Moved spots and after 10 mins we were into them and they were all big horses! could only fit 9 in the livie tank, so flicked on the tuna tubes and managed to stuff another 9 in there. Kept a few more as dead baits in the event we could go for a snapper fish in the arvo.
Happy with our livie situation we made the final run up to the rock.
The wind was ripping around the cape but nothing we couldnt manage. Proceeded to throw the livies in and after 30min or so we had a take, but the hook pulled. In the morning the Kingis were all very slow on the bite. Often toying with the Kohies, running with them and dropping them. But these Kohies are pretty tough and after a while we were into one.
Fish went around the 17kg mark and was returned to fight another day.
After another 30mins we had another king on a livie.
This one went 18kgs and again was returned.
From then on the bite took off, every livie that hit the water was getting smashed. we had a couple doubles on, one point 2 big kings swam right to the bite and I threw a livie in front of them and watched them scrap it out for him.
Was awesome fishing and all fish went in the 18-20 kg mark. We ended up landed 10 nice kings, 2 bust offs and a few pulled hooks.
Ended up keeping 1 king so Jeremy could weigh it for his clubs monthly fishing comp.
With only 2 sorry looking livies left we decided to make our way home, the wind had really picked up with so 30-40 knot gusts coming through, but it was all behind us so we cruised back with it.
Stopped at a place called "the supermarket" to grab some dinner, 3 casts and 3 snappers in the bin, unfortunately the wind meant we were drifting too fast to do any serious soft baiting, so we tried to find some shelter for a berly up, but was no good with the wind.
Stoked with our day on the kings we cruised home to a hot shower and cooked up some fish and chips.
