We got out on Saturday and it was terrible - punched a 10-15knot SW wind all the way out to 60m looking for birds and found none.  Anchored in 60, then 50, then 40 and all for 3 pannie snapper.  Not even the sharks were biting which is saying something!

Anyhow the highlight of the trip was spotting a whale.  We did our best to get close to it and find out what it was but it couldn't get a close look.  They blow 2 or 3 times before diving and you need to get up ahead of them so that when they next surface you are in their path .  . .  but whatever it was, it knew what we were up to as it kept changing direction.  It was a big beast judging by the huge flume of spray it was blowing.  I know there were humpbacks spotted off the East Coast 2 weeks ago so perhaps one of those.  I've seen killer whales, common dolphins and Maui's before out there but never a whale.  Anyone else seen them?

Some nice gurnard in the harbour alright. Our local Cossie Club had a gurnard comp, it was won by a fish weighing 1.62kilos.

As for whales I've only seen the ones Alex mentioned but have heard others talk about whales, I can't remember what ones they've seen but I think it was humbacks. I know sperm whales have stranded before as well as some species of beaked whales but I think they are smallish whales.

1.62kg is that some kind of record Smudge. That's rediculous.
Why choose either diving or fishing when you can do both. Besides crayfish tail is very good bait!!

Thinking of going for a fish on Saturday or Sunday but launching at Cornwallis can get a bit narly with an Easterly wind, is the beach launch at Little Huia the same or is it a bit more protected? Cheers.
Oh what a smasher - two eggs and a rasher!

Issues:
1/ last day of school holidays, wife is a teacher, grandchildren etc..
2/ looks good so long as dont go too wide:
3/ Yes bar looks real good this morning
4/ Tides wrong ..to cross is late , after 2m due to sunrise time, and get back in by 1 1/2hrs after high , means a very short time out there.

Sorry just seen your post too CrayZfish. . .  and bit late now.  I was thinking of going but didn't have the time for a boat trip which evening in the best case scenario, uses up the whole day.  Did you get out?

I did however manage to get the kayak out for a couple of hours myself.  Lots of baitfish about in the harbour.  The gannets seem to be working the channel from Cape Horn out to French Bay on the outgoing ad there's plenty of kahawai below.  Caught these 3 so will have the smoker fired up today.  All caught on a small paddletail lure.
I'm a total amateur when yak fishing but love how easy it is to throw it on the car and be off and out there in a few minutes.  Minimal wash down too!

Managed to align the stars and finally get out over the manukau bar. Forecast was a breezy off shore so we started off in close near Hamiltons Gap. Slow and sharky was the theme. Two big greys the first cutting off all our gear in a big battle then finding the Gaff. The next one was easier to cut the trace. Both about 5ft est 20kg. A few Kahawai and Gurnard and plenty of spiny dogs spread over the couple hours too. When the gear was taken I put a small lure on only to catch an unlikely 3 spinys all wound up together in the three cut off traces from earlier. Catch of the day at that point. Decided to head out wide as the wind was dying off right on queue. Got to about 16m before a group of 3 adult Maui shot up right on the bow. We slowed to a stop and tried to follow these amazing dolphins bit they were weary and stayed away popping up 100m or so away each time. Always a special time seeing them, ended up sighting a young one too which was neat. After that we went to 50m and anchored up. First bite a nice 61cm snapper. Slow and steady the kahawai and smaller snapper came aboard. A surprise hammer and coutta finished an awesome winter's trip out wide.

yea thanks Geoff. No biggies apart from the grey ones. Do you get those spiny dogs down your way they are a pain in the arse, had to move to get rid of them. Weird being out on such a nice day and did not see another boat.

Tried to raid Gumboot's carrot patch on the Huia bank in Manukau harbour.  Excellent weather, light breeze, moderate tide by Manukau standards.  Tried 4 different spots on the Huia bank, and another spot near the bank off Kaitarakihi while the tide was changing from outgoing to ingoing, but this spot was dead as (maybe the slack tide).  Usually KY are a by-catch when targeting gurnard, and if you catch less than one KY per gurnard you're doing well.  This time, KY took over on every spot, and they were coming aboard 3 at a time on the 3-hook flasher rigs I used.  I lost count of the KY, but there were over 20 of them, with at least 3 triples and 3 doubles.  Tried mullet, bullet tuna, pilchard.  Not one other species, all KY, unusual for the Big Muddy.

Learnt a bit about Danforth anchors.  They don't hold well in a strong current unless you let about 3 times as much warp out as depth (15 meters depth needed about 45m of warp.)  And you might as well forget berley when the current is ripping.
Far Quirk - I'm goin' fishn!
