If you catch a hiwihiwi it's a good time to move on. I steer clear of the harbour entrance because we usually do well closer to home. That said, the Huia Baks & South chanel are very productive areas.

If you can visualise a line between Paratutaeand the Lighthouse, Beyond that is what I consider to be the danger zone. That s what defines the harbour from the west coast. Go past there and you are in a potentially dangerous area

I’d agree with what Smudge is saying -if I catch hiwihiwi I’m in the wrong spot and the lighthouse to paratutae is a good line for safety although in summer the hole of Paratutae is good to drift over slack water for snapper .

Every day is school day;  I thought that hiwihiwi and marble fish were one and the same . . .  but it seems they are not!  They look strikingly similar but apparently are totally unrelated.

I was joking about them being poisonous by the way.  We see marble fish diving in the Manukau and I had assumed that those we hooked were the same species, but uncle google tells me the marble fish only eat kelp, whereas hiwihiwi are meat eaters.

Next thing someones gonna tell me that kingfish are not just adult jack-mackerel.

Jack mackerel are only juvenile kingfish AlexBig smile OK joking, joking! I know there are more species of fish oin the harbour than possibly any of us know. Didn't know marble fish were there!

I have never caught a Johnnie in the harbour or over the coast Macskipper but Skoti caught one on my boat a few years back and his dad has caught one as well. Both in the 'kura channel

How about a a list of what we've caught/seen in the harbour?

some of those fish a just little things. Some are winter only such as coutta, spiny dogs. Others will turn up from time to time eg seven gill sharks in October, some are random (carpet sharks, blue fish) and others will only be caught in certain areas (parore, scorpion fish etc etc).

Never seen one in the harbour or over the bar , I always figured the kahawai ate any juvenile ones before they had a chance .

That’s a hell of a list Smudge , don’t think I’ve caught half of them .

smudge please tell the story of the mantis shrimp. Are these the same mantis shrimp acclaimed to be the fastest creature on earth the ones that hit their prey so fast with one of their 23 or so appendages the water boils?
Why choose either diving or fishing when you can do both. Besides crayfish tail is very good bait!!
