Good hauls there, I think gurnard are getting more prolific (both coasts) .... or are we getting better at catching them thanks to smudge's tips and tricks ?

We don't know what we don't need till we've got it

Hi try harder cheers for that.
Yes I use ledger rigs one I made with small needle fish skirts / squid skirts. Other is standard gurnard grabber. Use light braid sb gear as thick line makes a humming noise in the current. Then find a nice gut or drop off the banks and burly up. Hope that helps

Inchiku jigs and sliders work well on gurnard too. Especially if you dress them up with a tiny bit of squid tentacle on on e of the hooks.

Yes as smudge said I also use a slider / inchiku jig as the sinker now and then works well

I can finally post here.Thumbs UpLeft Te Toro about 9.30am out to Big Bay,Mako pt?? fished in 3m out going tide for 2 gurnard 42cm 800grams. Quick visit from fisheries,no prblem there. Then decided to go and lok at the entrance from a distance.Sightseeing with Thomas.Back to Cake Island towards  Wattle bay. Anchored in 2m and boat drifted over the channel 22+m and Thomas got 2kg snapper while I bussied myself catching some sort brown spiny cod things that seemed quite large at around 300mm.Back at ramp by 2.00 nice day out.

Yeah plenty of them near the entrance - especially on the rocky edges either side.  Nice looking fish.  They are edible . . . but not especially sought after.

PJC! Good work! The Manukau is't an easy place to learn, a 2kilo snapper is a good fish.

I beg to differ with Alex though, he's an excellent fisherman no doubt about that but those fish are most likely hiwihiwi. Not poisonous and are the world champion hook swallowers. Was it one of these?

This is a small one:
