Gonna head out in the Gulf this weekend for a fish and will have a go for some kings. Going to Launch at either Orakei or Half Moon Bay. Where are the hot spots near these ramps for Livies?

Forget the mackeral and target small Kahawai, by trolling very small lures on a paravane.

There's quite a few hounding the bait schools just out NE from the Noises/Ahaas, just a bit tough getting onto the bigger kings, worth looking at Shearers buoy at the mo' too, but have someone on the helm to guide fish away from the chain quick smart or you'll get owned in a blink. Throw a top water popper first as you arrive...make your first cast or two good ones, they get shy fast there. Then try livies. Then I'd just head on out and keep an eye on the sounder and skyline, any bait school in a vertical line, stop right on top of them and jig the kings...watch the taxman though, a few mako's making the most of free lunches Smile

Fair enough, I was a bit harsh, Any live bait is better than none. Strangely enough I've found and have also heard from otehrs that for the gulf in general Kahawai is beter than mackeral because the swim harder for longer.

I have seen the same but not tried them in the gulf. Im used to the KY being to big and only an option for big kings so just use maks to make thing a little more interesting. Certainly will try both. Any spots that always hold KY?

Smaller bays around sun up Alex the best trick I';ve heard of is to mooch around with small lures on paravanes about 1000 rpm on the outboard.
