Has anyone been out lately in Hawkes Bay? How has the fishing been? Hoping to head out on Sunday if wind drops. Was wondering about going off razorback in 30-40m or Clifton in closer.

Things have dropped off a little, snapper are still being caught on "the hard" by the locals in the tinny's, fish inside the trawler line and hope like heck they missed some... 4 1/2" mesh doesn't miss much...

Fished 40-50m on some foul just off the pinnacle at the Cape about 2 weeks ago, lot's of Terakihi, odd gurnard and small Blue Cod... Carpet sharks are everywhere at the moment.

Good luck.

Went North on Sunday, did ok just to the North of Moeangiangi in 10-12 m. Snapper, gurnard, lots of small to med kahawai, and a few mackerel. First time I've had a legal snapper and gurnard on the same line ! Cracker day, sunny and calm. There were several boats a bit South of there in about 18-20 m but don't know how they were doing. Saw one of those trawlers working his way across the Bay on the way up, part of the reason we need to go so far !

They need to draw a line from the cape to portland and get all the trawlers to fish outside of that, or even make some artificial reefs that the cant drag their nets over

A mate of mine had a reef he made that was just starting to fire only to be smashed by a trawler. One of the reasons i sold my big boat and downsized to a 540. I just fish off Pourerere now don't have to go far at all and foul everywhere and usually a good feed of blue cod tarakihi and big gurnard.

Where about is the trawler line classed as being RAL or does it change all the time ??
Quite often see them looking like being in quite close to the shore in the bay opposite my place at Haumoana

Ended up changing plans on Sunday and heading north as wind was up a bit first thing. Headed up to Waipatiki and then the waterfall. Ok sign on the sounder and threw all sorts of bait, berley and ground bait plus slow jigs and softbaits at them but not a bite. Had one run on the strayline but it could have been a seagull as wasn't watching it at the time. Moved a few times as did boats around us and then headed back to flat rock. Got into a work up of Kahawhai and got a feed of those but overall disappoint to get nothing else. Sounded like a few people were getting some on the VHF and other weren't.
Curph I think we were the boats just south of you as we were in about 20m.
Should keep this topic going for HB reports.

It does move with the changes on the sea floor, try and fish where there is mud, lots of mud... They don't drag their nets through it as it ruins the fish. Right along the Marine Parade heading towards Clive is a good muddy spot out to around 30m in depth. You will see the trawlers on the outside of this area.

Many people have complained about Trawler/s being very close to shore, I have seen one myself under the cover of darkness with no lights, not even Navigation lights making a run back out before sunrise at the Beacons... That is 3rd world fishing practice.

Fairly quiet near Pania on Saturday, got a couple nice kahawai near the reef and just lots of spiny dogs further Northeast of the reef. Nice day to sit and have a natter and a coffee in the boat though !
