I was googling for DIY lures and found some people using bottle caps and chocolate wrappers as lures.

What are unusual bait or lures that you've used or seen used to successfully catch fish?Smile

I use to fish Moa point(sewer outlet) in wellington many years ago chasing points on comps, may sound bad but a Tampon soaked in fish oil with a 6/0 hook worked really well, the blue cod and yakkas loved it

Damn scuzzy, that's dedication. Hope you won those comps!

Have heard that spearmint chewing gum is good piper bait, haven't tried it yet.

Would be interested to see if you could make a softie tail out of banana skin and catch a snapper on it.

Several of the TV shows have done it in different forms; Straylining, ledger, marlin trolling, softies...

Pulled a bunch of KY out of a workup with a hook with part of a Magnum ice block wrapper taped to it, nailed 7 or 8 before a king ate one and took off with the only hook on the boat- best KY lure I think I've ever used LOL

At times in the gulf at the end of last year I think you could've dropped literally anything into those workups and caught snaps, we had one trip where we had a few split rings fail on deepwater softie rigs.
We would only realise something was wrong because we'd miss a heap of hits in a row, of course followed by the inevitable outbursts of uncontrollable cursing and mockery by everyone else on board (think along the lines of "strike them properly you pussy", "who the **** taught you how to fish", "I couldn't miss that many fish in a row if I tried" etc.).
After 8 or 10 (sometimes more) of these misses we'd wind up to find either a hookless cyclops rig or even plain 2oz ball sinkers that had been repeatedly smashed by snaps after the worm hook and attached softie had long disappeared. Would be amazing to get in the water with one of these workups and check out these feeding frenzies close up Thumbs Up
