you need stuff like these
  • Solid rings size M
  • Kevlar cord size S (100lb)
  • 1/0 Live Bait hooks or similar

start by measuring out the kevlar cord, use 22 to 25cm depending on how good you are with knots.

pull through about 9cm through the hook eye and tie a 3 turn uni knot trying to keep the tag end short to avoid wastage and mucking up your pre-measured kevlar.  Snug up knot with pliers.

repeat the same at the other end.  You also need a short length of heat shrink tube and a solid ring.

fold the cord and adjust legs to different lengths.  Tie an overhand knot to lock this in place.

Snug up knot with pliers.

slip on tube and heat shrink in place over the knot but keeping the loop at a maxiumum.  Loop on the solid ring

DIY on top compared to a branded rig with lighter hooks on bottom.  This is easy to tie and now you can buy all the components to build your own rigs.
give it death!

Chris, where can I get some Kevlar S in Auckland central or east shops? None seem to have stock of the S despite numerous queries. (Heavier stuff is readily available!)

I just landed some of this "S" size today so will be available for shops to order now.  I also have a lighter "XS" size arriving soon for those really light lucanus type jigs.

Was in Coro today using a slow jig & hooked something sizable, but alas the hook straightened. Had, I would say medium pressure on too..
Will be making some of those up....

Excellent post Chris, pics are a huge help as well, cheers.
I will have to see if I can't find some of those ingredients, esp the cord and the hooks.

Nice one Chris Thumbs Up brilliant post , that cord is hard come by.

Ya think some of you shop guys would put lure packs together with the;

  • Solid rings
  • Kevlar cord
  • Live Bait hooks
A set for Knife jigs and a set for Slow jigs or two sizes for each with hooks, rings and cord in sizes to match for each ya know what I'm getting at. LOL
Your not walking on water while I'm fishing here.......

Had a hunt thru 5 shops for those items & nothing, so improvised & found these items pictured.

Used 200LB spectron braid, Craig from Top Catch G.I kindly gave me 5mThumbs Up
Hooks found em at YeeHaa... mission accomplished back home after a beautiful feed of fish & chips from Oceanz in Botany... can't wait to try em.

The top hooks were straighter than pictured, I bent them in a bit to see how weeak they were aacckk...

Thx for the idea though Chris Thumbs Up

Good move, you know those SJ41's rust like tin.

Cheers Chris, was doing it different but that uni snell onto the hook looks the business. Out of interest how small do the JM monster hooks go? Got some casting jigs I wanna rig up ~ 5/0 or smaller.

Decoro stock that small YGK assist cord.

I sell kevlar assist in 4 weights 80,100,150,250lb (as in photo below)

I also stock Technora assist cord(200lb) top quality but a lot more supple than kevlar but excellent abrasion qualities. Comes in colour black, also cheaper than kevlar

I also have hooks for DIY jiggers 1/0(inchikus) 3/0, 5/0, 7/0 Jignesis as below

The hooks used in the madeup assist set are not available for DIY(they are a lighter version of 3/0)

The 3/0 hooks are great for all slow pitch jigging, very strong and sharp and will not rust

Thanks very much for this. Couple of questions (complete noob)

Why heatshrink it?

And how do you attach a kabura or little squid skirt securely? Mine keep falling off so clearly I'm doing something wrong

I don't think heatshrink tube is necessary. Not sure what you mean by skirts falling off, but a bead above the hooks stops them slipping down too far. The hole in the bead needs to be wide enough for the cord to pass through, but not so big that it can pass over a knot. Soft rubber beads have lots of uses, but I prefer hard beads for this job.
