Yesterday with the winds anticipated in the late morning we tried something different.

On the water at 6, anchor and berley and flasher rigs off Chelsea..

We did just OK. No sign on the sounder but eventually plenty of other boats there. Didn't look like many people catching though?

Steady stream from 350mm to 450mm.. Had two decent fish spit the hook :(
Put out some yellow tail livies which got no attention whatsoever.

Also got a smallish legal trevally which was sashimi while boat cleaning!

Nice change of scenery from softbaiting and only a few mins from launching at Westhaven!

G'day
Left WH at 5.30am and 1st stop at The Barges encountered too many tiddlers. Went wider to David Rocks and Maria - zilch.
Picked up a few on Sliders and good old Pillies. A small hammerhead gave Jnr a run for his money. Coupla nice KY for the smoker.
All in all good to get out there after being too busy pre Xmas but man that bloody wind followed us all over - bit rocky Disapprove

Tried Stanley Pt on way back at 2pm................drift a tad quick.
Enjoyed the usual muppetry at WH with impatient ramp users.
Gotta chill people.

Looking forward to next weekends day out.

After work fish yesterday. Launching okahu at around 4pm.

Picked up a few snapper up to 440mm drifting on the city side of Motutapu but nothing remarkable.

Think if weather plays ball next trip will be out of Auckland.. Maybe Eastern coro or Bream Bay.

With the winds forecasted today we launched early from Okahu Bay Ns made the call to give city channel a try rather than venturing further afield.

We had the most success between Stanley Point and the Bridge. Fish caught on a Santa themed 30g Microjig and soft baits. The dragged lime tiger crazy legs picked a few as did a worked crazy legs in lime tiger.

Motor oil was not popular with no interest until the change.

Fished 630am to 11 with 7 snapper 34cm to 42cm between 2. Happy overall

Another early start on the water just before sun up and hauled ass out to Motutapu Home Bay.

Soft baits were of no interest to the fish. Changed over to 30g kaveman Microjigs and had snapper flooding the bin. Yellow stripe was flavour of the day but after our only one was busted off we were both on red whites.

Ended up with 10 from 350mm to 550mm.

Kaveman...will be ordering again soon!

Good fishing, Ecko. Are you dropping vertical and a few twitches, or casting well ahead?

We had more success with a vertical drop, slow winding much like a kabura. 5 to 8 winds and drop bakc down. Drift speed around 1 knot. Great fun! Going to try head out this evening to inner harbour if I can convince my mate!

Thanks for the info, mate. I've got a few of Kaveman's finest in various colours, will give it a crack some time.

Welcome to the co-owner of our boat ^ LOLClap

We shot out yesterday after work for a quick fish.
We caught the last of the outgoing and start of the incoming in the city channel.

5 out of 6 snapper were on microjigs, 1 on an Atomic Sunrise jerk shad.

Fishing was reasonably slow with only 3 put backs in the 3 or 4 hours we were out.

However the condition of the keeper fish up to 460mm was excellent with great fat fillets coming off. That's tea tonight sorted...

We tried the city channels this morning and it was very quiet. With a 6am low tide we were fishing from 630am - through until 10 am. Bar one 32cm fish and one undersized we just couldn’t get onto them.

By the looks of it many other boats were the same with a lot of moving around going on trying to find a patch of fish.

Hardest day I’ve ever had there at this time of the year for many years. Was it the tide? Or just “ that’s fishing” any theories welcome!

We were out at 7:30 picked up two 36-38s on the first drift then went to Motuihe as I had a visitor and wanted to show them a bit more of the gulf. Picked up a bin full of 35+ off Home Bay but nothing big... well maybe one that look promising but spat the hook. Home by 11:30 in a very choppy harbour from all the boat traffic.

It's a little quiet on here  at the moment? Launched the FC 390 at Army bay Whangaparaoa at about 8:30 Saturday Am. Headed out to the Tiritirimatangi side of the channel after picking up a couple of Kahawai under the workups off army bay. SW came up quickly so headed back to sheltered water (we have a puppy on board so comfort is a priority) . My wife got a nice 95ish cm King on a white soft bait back under the birds. Very good effort on light gear in 5 meters of water.

Lost 1x good snapper but pretty quiet on that front.

How is everyone else getting on?

Hey JD, a mate and I chugged out on the FC390 in the Mahurangi Harbour area around 6.45am on Saturday and deployed some salmon burley.
Classic strayline mission, we committed to the one spot through the tide. Pulled anchor at 11.30am. Was slow n steady at first. But managed a feed and a few line pullers. Felt like we were on the lucky spot as others around us looked quiet. Pic of a nice flurry good pannies that came through mid tide.
"There was an old man from Brussels, who was hooked on Opotiki mussels...

Got out yesterday around 1pm leaving Okahu bay heading towards cable lanes north of Tiri .Was out this way last Friday for th annual sparky fishing comp with good results .
Found a heap of birds sitting on the water around 1km north of Tiri near the cable lane .Sounder showed heaps of bait . Sabikis deployed and a full string of the biggest jack macs i’ve ever seen pulled up.
First live bait dropped was hit as i was dropping it slowly line began to run . The first king in the bin not huge but plenty of fun .
next hour was same result no long waits for hits had to just motor back to the bait every now and then . Released a couple more kings around 90cm .
Then learnt a couple of lessons on bigger models first lesson use a net droped on on side of boat not lifting it in cleanly net was beside me . Then got heavy on the drag with no need 45m deep sandy bottom busted off .Should have checked leader for damage after a fish or two .
I didn’t have shark issues but there’s some big shadows in the water .Wouldnt recomend a swim in the area
Wind got up and had a classic wind against tide ride home too Okahu .
Mate who was to late to come out was good enough to meet me at the ramp for a retrieve and traffic management in to my drive way at home .
All and all a good day out

great report, mate. Sounds like a fantastic day battling kingies.

With livies, do you use a circle hook or a J hook - presumably through the nose?
