I was out last week out back of Rangi; Gardners Gap area. Was mid morning and slow to start. Did well on our last drift along the white cliff face drifting the 10-6 mtr contour line. Picked up about 7 snaps in an hour. We were getting double and triple hook ups. Nothing big, all between 33-38 cms. 5” Zman Smokey shad caught half. Rest on 80g Orange gold sliders. Good sess.

Out Thursday 31/03 in glamour conditions just after low tide around 13.00hrs. Boil ups and bird action in close N of Owhanake Bay Waiheke. Lots good size KY. Kept one and moved out NNW to 16m soundings on chart.
Caught limit if 7 nice snapper in 1.5hrs. Size a good spread ranged 48 - 33cms. Had FQ’s fish factory format in play. One slider & one coin drop reasonably vertical in rod holders. One heavier 3/4 jig head with Smokey shad dragged good distance out back and cast ahead with 3/8 jighead also smoker shad. Couple double hook ups caused bit of shambles at times. Dragged jighead was most consistent. The lighter jighead caught the largest once it had drifted well aft. This prompted the heavier jighead outback strategy. Only a few with sliders in rod holder   But every time I worked them hook ups straightaway. More hands on deck would have increased the catch no doubt. Time for a quick blast across to Woody Bay for swim and a beer then home.

Made the call despite the weather, yes  I was that person at the ramp who ran out of fuel, sort of.connect tank clip wrong way round, once going all fine.Went round to Byrants bay ,Ponui, 10m water for lots ofthrow backs and a resonble gurnard for the gulf, across to Scullys so bait drifted in too kelp but ore throw backs. Finally wind dropped and slight drizzle.Out to the mussel farm that no one wanted and 9 snapper quick conssion. Most in the 32/33 mark except wife 50cm. Gurnard full of roe

Found a couple of things wrong with boat ,turns hard left so will adjust trim thing on skeg.
3800rpm gave 25mph and wot 5500 35mph but started to miss,so will take to mechanic.

Nice mate - the weather changed a lot from Friday night to Saturday. Windy showed 6kts all morning and we got out there by 7:30 and it was a howling lumpy Sou-Easter 15+ knots. Not enjoyable in a small boat. Ended up back around Western side of Waiheke but not much doing.

Were suppose to go to Kaiaua farms but seeing how nephew brought the gas it was a Wilson Bay farm trip.
Bloody glad we did. 2 hrs and had our 14 snapper 1 at 15lb the rest 45 to 52 range, very thin for size.Maybe mussel diet?? no roe/milt.they are like the have spawned soft and flabby.

Mixed baits, mullet, kingfish, kahawai and softbaits left in holder.

Pleasant surprise when coming back in Kawakawa bay.Dolphins, not playing but in serious feed mode.

Early start this morning - headed out past Waiheke/ Tiri towards the 40m+ in hope of finding some work-ups.
Stopped at various spots on the way drifting over the middle ground, picking up a few small snapper and a gurnard. Saw a few birds flying but they seemed to be heading further out towards Barrier.
Persisted and started to get into a few better models around the 45m mark at about 10am just drifting along with the wind covering lots of ground. On and off through pockets of fish.

Hooked something that felt like a decent Pannie until it started to run like a freight train. Lots of calls for kingfish as was running and holding down deep. After 25 minutes on light gear, this surfaced out behind the drogue.

Didn't have scales but it went 77cm and was really thick around the middle and head - like to think it was over that 20 pound mark, but not sure. Great fish and swam back healthy to produce more stock. Online conversions have it at around 18.5lbs.

Another great specimen of the day.

Another few in the bin went around late 40's early 50's. Epic day and great to be out on the water!

Time for a brew.

Out at dawn on Sunday, went out past Waiheke, found a workup with lots of dolphins and gannets but few Snapper, so headed North of Gannet about 10km and there was lots for nothing apart from a whale.
So we did a drift, and the Snaps started coming aboard, and the fishing got better and better. There must have been a bed of worms (well things that looked like finger bandages, not quite sure what they were) and the Snaps were on the chew. Good fish to 60cm and taking anything - Kabura, Softbaits and Slow jigs. We were binned up by 10:15am and headed home in the calm seas with the little Surtees 485 doing 21 knots. Perfect spring fishing.
Snaps were fat as, leaving a coating of fat on the filleting knife.
Also got a Kahawai for the smoker, put Chilli/Lime rub on it and smoked it - spectacular!

Went out today with a nice SE 10knt wind which wasnt suppose to be there.went out to the farm off Byrants Bay(Ponui Island),which NZSFC/Legasea were dead against.

Anchored out side of farm in our usual spot and not long after arriving action. picked up 2 gurnard and 18 snapper ranging from 65cm to 33,most had blown guts or deep hooked. Some had roe some not.

Well the fishing was full on east coast coromandel.drifting in 20-8 mtres. all around 40 -50cm. with a few stonkers that ran and hard to stop and when i had them under control they would bite throw the 60 lb trace. 1 35lber was court and released a few days earlier, came across a work up the area of a acre, with beauties under it. fish in great condition. its all on.

Well what can I say ?? Yeah gentleman's hrs of 8.00am on the water,9.30 high. Tried Ponui Farms for throw backs. out in the middle of firth ,1/2 way to waimati island ,drift and still throw backs then a few sharks. Presume sharks as our little 6000 shimano bait runners werent stopping them, spoiled of 300m each then snap goes the trace. Rerig and same again.**** this, down to middle farm between coro and kkb, more gear lost but managed to get one along side. Hammerhead of around 4ft,then Thomas is on with something good, yep under size king, his first, gut hooked and cut trace without lifting from water, more undersize snapper,by now 11.30 and tide running nicely so back to kkb 16m mark, within seconds both had hammers on again, tail wrapped little 3ft ones,Hmm in to real shallow water,4m off ramp and more bloody hammers, one aprox 6ft and greyish compared to brown ones we seen earlir, got this one to boat after a battle and had to cut trace, could see line somehow got in a gap in teeth.     Seem to be able to get sharks 1/2 way up from depth before they realised hooked then they were like freight trains.   Did our good deed at ramp as child fell in and cuts from oysters so gave parents first aid kit, waited while boy sorted. Lucky no stitches required.. Roll on next Saturday.
