Launched Gulf Harbour yesterday morning around 6am and shot out to Flat Rock as I haven’t fished there before and wanted to give it a go. Got there just before 7, dropped the Kaburas and it was all on. It was manic for the next hour and a half with two of us getting 12 fish up to 11lb. After that it went quiet so left at 10. Best morning I’ve had for a while.
Oh what a smasher - two eggs and a rasher!

Had an awesome trip out yesterday with a mate in 40m behind Tiri. Found a huge school of anchovies that blacked out the sounder up to 20m. Fishing was too easy with most species present and in good size. Caught some of the largest Jack Macs I have ever seen that pulled like Kahawai's but made lousy live baits for the rest of the day. Came back to a dive recovery team trying to pull a crane out of 5m in the middle of Army bay
Inner City Slayers.

Forecast was to moderate to 15kts in the morning. Woke to the alarm at 5am to hearing the wind gusting in the trees. Checked the now casting to see 20 gusting 30kts. Txt crew to sleep in. Woke again at 7am and the trees were quiet. Rechecked the now cast and was down to 15kts. Quick txt and we were off to the races.
Headed down to Tamaki Strait to shelter from the Nor’easter and tried out Sharkbait’s old stomping grounds that way. Anything pink was the go. Coconut ice Zman’s, pink kabura and pink Catch Pocket Rocket doing the damage until the low tide 11am. 7 nice snaps from 32 to 40cms.
Well worth the effort!

Nice work, Mr King of Spin. How good is that - a quick trip in the Smartwave and back home in time for a late dinner. Fishing your feet first, and you got them in the pic too! Smile
Enjoyed the report and the pics.

shot out from kawakawa bay after work and zoomed up the waiheke passage to meet a mate at a pin in the firth, was blowing easterly and we had a decent swell but got to work, set up a few drifts and slowly but steadily filled the bins using 30gm micro jigs catching fish between 31~44cm all fat autumn conditioned fish.
high light was racing back to the ramp after dark as we both have smartwave 4200s with 50hp 4 strokes albiet different brands.
first time using my sounder and got given a lesson on using sidescan function which seems like a real handy tool!
no pictures of fish because we all know what dead snapper look like...

got out yesterday after work headed to a spot in the firth and first cast was on a good fish and had one of those magic afternoon evenings where almost every cast was a fish, using a kaveman 30gm micro jig and bruised banana curly tail zman, kept three for the pot. had a great scrap with a slabby 49cm in 2m of water which was fun! sent it home to breed

Lovely morning to be out, beach launched off bays, not as many parks as usual, very busy and heaps of boats out. We got dozen nice pannies out on worms beds. Bigger fish scarce. Maybe further out. Saw local frewza dinghy come in with couple little boys with dad getting retreival trailer on quad, the young lads (under 10 yrs old)  called me over and proudly showed off their chilly bin,  with a  nice bag of slightly bigger fish all taken on jigs.

We were at Flat Rock mid-morning today. A dozen boats and nobody catching anything. Headed out
north/west and came across hundreds of dolphins heading for Whangarei at a rate of knots. Followed them for a while but they were not stopping so had a drift with lures and managed 3 keepers but nothing to write home about. Gannets spread far and wide and diving but in ones and twos. No work ups seen.

Headed out early yesterday, for some reason I thought there might be a few people on the water Big smile
Did 2 drifts at Rangi, picked up a couple of decent snapper, then decided to head out to wider. All of Auckland was out towards the elbow, there were gannets prospecting and spread out over a wide area, but diving ones and twos. plenty of boat on the sounder. So we stayed and slowly picked up fish, most decent size. Kaburas worked, but softbaits dragged out the back were getting hit by the bigger units. Went home with 12 and a gurnard. SO GOOD TO BE OUT!

First post for probably about 10 years after moving the Perth then travelling around Europe until Covid made us regugees in our homeland.  It's nice to see some familiar names still posting occasionally. We were finally able to get our nice wee Surtees 495 out for decent spin yesterday.  Launched easily off the sand at Bucklands Beach around 6.45am and headed out by the Ahaahs's as the weather was glorious and just because we could.

Lots of other boats out there, nearly all anchored up so we just found some sign and drifted.  Kabulas weren't touched but some nice glittery pink Z-man curley tails picked up three from 36 - 38cm.  All a little slow so I dropped down a running rig with some squid and immediately had interest.  From there we just caught drifting with the bait.  As expected it slowed right down for an hour so as the tide turned but picked up again and they were still biting strongly when we left.

Fish were mainly around the 35 - 36cm mark but very hungry and even with the KL hooks a lot were gut hooked.  Ended up with our limit (which we don't normally do but probably a reaction to months of fishing deprivation and it being such an amazing day).

Great day and grateful to have this amazing resource on our doorstep.  Hopefully we will see some other members out there.

Nice report mate, welcome back to the Forum. What a lovely day out on the water with your partner - and delicious fresh fish for you, family and friends. That's what it's all about. It's amazing how grateful an elderly neighbour, for example, is to get a couple of small fillets of fresh snapper.

Made a casual plan with mate to do the full lap around Waiheke launching from HMB. With no expectations and bellys full of bacon and eggs we made it to the boat ramp at 9am as the real fishermen were coming in.

The plan was to softbait the shallows along the north side of Waiheke then around to Man o War for late afternoon pizza. We only got through the Motuihe channel when we spotted a few turns diving so had a look. My mate worked the slider while I cast a stickbait, managed two snaps for the bin on the slider no takers on the top water set.

The predicted northerly had picked up by this stage and trying to softbait the shallows around the northern side would have been hopeless so turned and went through Sergeant channel, cruising the South end of Waiheke in glassy conditions on our way to Waiheke Channel.

Got right up in the shallows 2-3 m and started softbaiting. Had made a plan the night before to softbait with my boys kidstix as mate doesn't have a sofbait rod and I don't have a second. Casting it was a nightmare but got a good 10m on third attempt, it sunk to the bottom and what ya know, snapper on.

This continued for about three hours with us both netting some nice pannies in the shallows and releasing many more. With a full bag of fish within site of Man o War we decided to head home as by this stage there was about 100 boats anchored up all heading for shore on their tenders and we didn't fancy waiting 2hrs for a pizza.

Great day on the water 55 mile round trip, go the the kidstix!

Got a 12 pounder 68cm snapper this arvo,  straight after pulling hooks a 30lb plus king at the boat. King took a piper sight fished at back of boat was a massive scrap on spin reel with heavy braid in 10m of water. Wife was second or two too late with gaff boat side when fish somehow managed throw hook. We were debating her gaffing abilities when my straylined half a maumau took off on other rod. Nice surprise another decent big snapper.
Wife did catch an excellent eagle ray as well, which we released. She reckons if hadn’t got it up I would blamed her for losing a decent snap or king, which to be honest I may well have done.

Are you sure the slow gaffing wasn't a bit of delayed payback for your kayak tutorial outings with the neighbour? LOL
Anyway, another great trip for you Shane. Been waiting for your report of a big king in the shallows - so close...they love those piper.

You may be right TTK.
Had another nice day out there today 4 good snapper, wife caught 2 and I caught 2, nothing huge just nice fat 40cm fish. Also released 2 kings. First on a stickbait, second one was on a live yellowtail. The second fish actually took bait while fisheries officers had pulled up alongside and were checking the contents of our chilly bin, which at that stage only had wife’s 2 fish in it. Was quite funny when livie  on other side of boat went off. They pushed off and watched us catch the kingi was around 75 cm and release it immediately. Few fish to go in smoker tomorrow morning, all prepared.
