quick fish this morning at meola , snapper biting , brought a couple of 30 cm fish home . The coolest thing was a school of Kingies about 600mm each landlocked in one of the large rock pools. I shot a bit of video on my phone so will try to post it.

That sounds pretty cool. I've been meaning to get out on the reef for a while but can't seem to get time and tides to align.

That is one pretty keen kahawai! How did he even fit it in?

There are lots of kahawai in the BOI's at the moment. A quick trip out early this morning had feeding kahawai for as far as the eye could see... but man are they difficult!

I was supposed to be hunting for kings, but it was a bit difficult when the boat was completely surrounded by kahawai. So I told myself I'll catch a few kahawai while they're feeding and then get back to hunting for kingfish. An hour later I was still trying to make the kahawai eat! Success only came after multiple fly changes and eventually dropping right down to a tiny size 10 krill fly- fished fast.

Obviously all these fish were fixated with microbait. Once again, I found significant inadequacies in my flybox... I didn't really have anything that truly matched what the fish wanted. More tying of tiny flies would be needed at home.

I thrashed a big popper fly otherwise for a couple of half hearted kingfish follows from smallish fish sitting in green water.

Hopefully the forecast easterlies will stir the kings up a bit and push in some clear bluewater.

Can't really complain about all those kahawai though... despite their fussiness

Down here Craig when they're on the anchovies and ignore everything else I pull out an old bag full of reject bonefish flies and fish the smallest I have on hand. Works most of the time and gives those old beat up flies another life.

Yep, my thinking exactly. I've had success in the past on a tiny anorexic clouser so was thinking that would be the first pattern I would replenish.

It was interesting how all the major gaps in my flybox were all at the smaller end of the scale.

2 early mornings, 2 harbours in 2 days. This mornings trip to a new spot up north saw a waking fish early but that was it as the wind picked up making spotting difficult. And ski biscuits arrived in force.  Stunning water though so worthy of more time.

Yesterday’s tootle around Tga saw a number of fish over rays and an excitingly large free swimmer that inspected my fly closely before turning away. And... trout struck another fish that gave a solid eat on a crease fly. Sheeeeeit. LOL
Ol mate Jase nailed his chance though. Plenty fish about.

Sounds like Tauranga is still the place to be. Should be good weather down there too. We're catching an easterly up here in the north and it looks like it is going to persist for a week or more.

I just fitted a casting deck to our tinnie so looking forward to the wind dropping and being able to dance around on my new deck

That’s what’s going on up front in mine. Wires going from charger to the Minn Kota battery under the deck.

I used a reject bonefish fly this morning on my #3 nymph rod (gold body Worthington worm) and hooked and lost a fish on it, rainbow trout in the Rangitikei River. 😁

Wolfie, using a reject bonefish fly in a river does not make it SWF! But good effort on the hook-up. Those Rangitikei rainbows sure know how to jump and throw a hook.

Nick, can I see brackets already in place to support a casting deck? Is that a frewza?

I tried a prototype casting deck made out of 13mm ply and couldn't believe how it transformed my fly fishing. I was in heaven... slightly bendy bouncy heaven (the 13mm ply was a bit weak ) but heaven nonetheless. I bought some 17mm ply and did it again. It seems plenty strong enough. Can't wait to get out there and start throwing some line on it

I think it was a sea-run trout from the estuary so it would then be SWF!

good stuff on the platform work Craig, Nothing like getting an advantage, I reckon every inch of height on the deck gets another 10 feet of visibility.

Yep, I'm totally amazed at what an extra two foot of height does for you in terms of visibility.

A whole lot nicer than being precariously perched on the anchor well lid too

Yep, Frewza 4.1. Need a pontoon as where I hunt ducks its tidal and non pontoons have often been known to swamp and sink. So its a compromise. Pontoons naturally resonate hugely, so you get hull slap which pisses shallow water snaps off. Caught hundreds of kings off the boat so the noise is obviously less of an issue for them.

The brackets you can see are actually for the front seat, but like you I have a chilli bin for the passenger to sit on. The casting deck and marine carpet were per my spec ex factory, save noise and save on fish thrashing around and damaging themselves. If I could put a platform in I would!

I got out yesterday morning for a few hours no hook ups. saw a group of three kingfish free swimming no wakes and 1 single fish that made its presence felt by splashing its tail. while i was trying to spot where it went it appeared at the boat. it was the biggest ive seen yet, no chance for a shot. Its just great to know these guys are there and get a chance to see them even if no hook ups.

Got out on Saturday and saw nofishy activity from 7am to 20am despite clear water an gentle breeze. I did spit a meter wide stibgray go by about 4m away in thigh deep water but no escorts- but the target practice was too good to pass up so let fly a volley a casts at it as it slowly moved on. A few minutes later was unpicking a knot in the running line with the fly sitting on the bottom for a while- then the line jerked as something grabbed the fly. But that didnt connect. Thus ended my session. Not been been a good fishing summer so far and its over soon!

That's a tough one Wolfie, the usual spots not working?  I haven't been out in the salt much this summer.  Every time I plan to the weather packs up on the sea so I head to the trout waters repeatedly.  I'll get it right at some point. Last year me and Simon did best on the local just after the first lockdown with evening lows fishing into the dark.
