On Tuesday morning i woke up early with the missus and headed down to the Pauanui wharf with the intention of catching some Trevs from the shellfish beds. I was fishing with braid and a 2 meter 15lb flurocarbon wind on, 3/0 recurve hooks and of course fresh pipi bait that was salted the night before. I was fishing this for a while and not getting anything, drifting it along the pipi beds with the current. There was a large school of about 20+ parore (the banded ones) which i had ignored until i had a closer look and noticed a few fish that were simply too big to be parore and infact were BRUTE trevally.. 4kg+. This got me very excited and i dropped a line down but they kept on zooming everywhere and seemed to be very aware of me, whether it be my shadow my rod above them or my line??  and the times when they weren't aware of me they just ignored the juicy pipi bait in front of them.   Then i thought i'd walk up the wharf a bit to where there was a nice pipi bed with piper grass in about a metre of water and what would you know it there was 3 real nice trevs, one that looked a good 5kg+ no jokes, sitting in the current feeding on the pipis, slowly moving forwards in a line. Super cool to see...   i did get a bit over excited and drop down a bait in a pretty amateur nature that landed behind them, and when i would in they either saw the bait or me and got spooked and ran off..

So i would like to know what is the trick to catching these trevs??
Is stealth a major factor? eg. precise casting and placement of bait like a flyfisherman?
Should i only put on one pipi to the hook or thread a few on?
Is lighter line the key?
Berley?    Smashed up shellfish?

Would be cool to get some advice so i can slay a few and get my revenge when i return.

Also, can you catch them off the wharves all year round??

cheers,
levi

Levi, try gulp crabs on a 50-60lb fluro leader, you can go lighter if there is not much foul.  Trev's are rather line shy and you might find they are not feeding on pipi's but the crabs etc around them.

Hi LEVCAT, I am no expert at all on trevs, but there was a time i used to hunt them along wharves and river mouths etc. The thing worked for me off the wharf was a berley bag which brought them closer and small cubes of pillies which i got them used to and then put those cubes to size 2-3 hook. I had the best trev fishing in my life. If you target them off the wharf then you must have a net to pull em out.
Good luck mate, 4-5kg trevs are trophy fish IMO.

shoby -fully agreed...   I was thinking if i actually did end up hooking one of those brutes off the wharf then i would be very lucky to land it on the 10lb braid. and thanks for the advice, cubing sounds like a good method that could be worth a good go.

Blindspot - that's very interesting... hadn't thought about that one. live bait crab could be an option as well LOL

small cubes burleyed in should hold them throwen a little way out ,use the same for bait then let then run and play off the wharf useing just enough tension to keep hook set .

I'd be targetting them at the bottom of the tide, in the hole on the south side of the island off pleasant point (next ramp up harbour), use half a dozen pipis myself. This is a never fail winter spot for trevs for me, but when I was there a month ago, all I caught were snaps.

Yeah trevs are my second favourite to catch next to snappers, Ive caught heaps mate and contrary to what people say bro I don't think there that line shy at all they just aren't digging what your offering at that particular time unfortunately :(

If you want trevs then berley is the secret mussel kina or what I do is go to any old estuary thats got pipis mussels etc smash them up for ground bait gets them buzzing

I use 15kg mainline with a 1.5 meter double with a single size 3 recurb use prawns those ones from wooleys for 3-4 bucks trevs love em, or a little chunk of pilchard, but the thing they usually always hit is a long triangle strip of sqiud hook it so it flaps around they love moment or put a head on with tentacles moving, if theres heaps around they will almost certainly take a softbait they love them 5 inch nuke chooks I got half a dozen up to 4kg at matapouri bay on squid and softys

also if using prawns you will catch parore, moki, smooth hounds, I love how shellfish baits open up new possibilitys one buger of a thing is spotties go crazy over pipis lol

Hey Levi if you want to test your angling prowess I know you hit Misquito Bay a bit the local Dunns have been going down there every weekend for the last 2 months and been catching Blue Moki up to 12 pounds in the KaiparaStern Smile told him he was a blow ar se he said alright then when I went out to meet him for a fish he had a 2kg moki in his sack wtfClap and also some very respectable trevally not the 4kg models you were talking bout instead 30-55cm size

Hi mate, have heard that you shouldn't salt bait with iodised salt (ie most normal table salt), as this is a fish repellent. Not really convinced about this, as I've caught lots of fish with table-salted baits. Still, could be worth taking out of the equation. Natural salt/rock salt is very cheap.

Feed them pillie cubes and get them feeding before fishing then stick one on a hook and throw it by hand don't cast it. The extra splash created by a casted bait seems to put them off I found off the rocks a gently lobbed bait by hand seems to work better having someone else do it is better still.

me and a few mates used to go up to that wharf a few years ago and caught some very good trevs and ky

found the trevally moved alot and were hard to catch, when we did hook up it was on cubes of pillys.

some were far too strong and dealt to us in seconds

Landed a 3kg trev off that wharf on 3kg line Nov. pipi bait, small hook, 15lb fluoro. Cast out into the channel. th eadvice given here is good - throw bait/berley out to get them feeding then hide a hook in a piece....

also just wondering where the best place to get the pipis from? and what part of the tide the trevs are most likely to be around the wharf area?
